I’d like to start off by wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
As reported in the Week End courier fire department dispatching will soon be leaving the Fundy Health Centre. Right now it looks as if the dispatching will be done from St.Stephen, but details aren't finalized yet. Fortunately for right now no union jobs will be cut, but once dispatching leaves the Centre switchboard will close at 11P.M.Casual employees will be effected the most and will see the largest reduction in hours. What does this all mean? Personally to me it means another service is leaving Blacks Harbour and another nail will be hammered into the coffin of the Health Centre. Because of my employment there and corporation policy I am not allowed to say too much so I will leave it up to the elected officials to protect what is left.
Connors investment fund remains hovering around $11.69.
An interesting thing happened on Thursday. In a unanimous ruling issued Thursday, the New Brunswick Court of Appeal found Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms "imposes on New Brunswick municipalities the obligation to enact, print, and publish their bylaws in the two official languages." This could cost municipalities millions of dollars in translation services. Will this affect Blacks? I’m not sure.
The World Wrestling Federation will be touring N.B. in the Month of January for the first time in 5 years. They are playing 4 dates with the newest one announced at Harbour Station. People I spoke to were pleased about them being in Saint John, but were upset with the $59 price tag for ring side seats up from the $25 price tag 5 years ago. Some sad news reported in the wrestling world last week. Russ Hass who wrestled in the Ohio Wrestling Federation, which is the WWF’s developmental organization, died in his sleep at age 27. Hass had wrestled in some WWF “dark matches”, but was sent to Ohio for some conditioning.
I got a lot of E-mail after my last article about fruitcake asking me to republish the “turkey poem”, so here it is.
The Turkey Poem
The turkey shot out of the oven
and rocketed into the air,
It knocked every plate off the table
and partly demolished a chair.
It ricocheted into a corner
and burst with a deafening boom,
Then splattered all over the kitchen,
completely obscuring the room.
It stuck to the walls and the windows,
it totally coated the floor;
There was turkey attached to the ceiling,
where there'd never been turkey before.
It blanketed every appliance;
it smeared every saucer and bowl;
There wasn't a way I could stop it;
that turkey was out of control.
I scraped and I scrubbed with displeasure,
and thought with chagrin as I mopped,
I'd never again stuff a turkey
with popcorn that hadn't been popped.
Unfortunately the days leading up to Christmas haven’t been joyous ones for everybody. Several natives of Blacks Harbour passed away in the week leading up to Christmas. They include Romeo Savoy, Norma Sheehan, Bea Leavitt and Arthur Babineau and Lila Leeman. I can honestly say that I knew each of these people in one way or another and everyone who knew them will sadly miss them. Their passing is especially hard to deal with at this time of year and I deepest sympathy goes out to their families.
We little knew that this morning,
God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always by our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link us together again.
Death comes to everyone. No matter how big or how small. No matter if you're wealthy or poor, rich or famous. When the "Maker" calls you home it's time to go. Even Hollywood lost one of its most famous citizens on Thursday when Foster Brooks passed away. I remember as a kid watching Foster on those old Dean Martin celebrity "Roasts". Foster main act was just pretending to be drunk and boy was he funny.
