In case you didn’t know U.F.O sightings are on the increase in Canada. Mostly out west. But all are or have been investigated and 15% defy explanation. A recent survey conducted that over 75% of the population believe there may be some other form of intelligence in the Univrerse. World renown ufologist Stanton Friedman who now resides in Fredericton (not sure why he picked there) says that every year more and more people believe “the truth is out there”.
Sunday kicked off an important day in New Brunswick history, as Sunday shopping became a permanent fixture in some communities like Moncton. Retailers from all over the Maritimes will be keeping their eyes on these communities to see if there is money to be made and I’m sure within the year Sunday shopping will be year round in Saint John.
The Blacks Harbour fire department played the St. George fire department in a hockey pick up game on Saturday night. We played to a 10-10 draw and everybody had a good time. Although the game was just for fun and wasn’t advertised there were quite a few spectators on hand. The Circle of Friends club had their private skate prior to our game so maybe we drew the crowd from them.
Also note that there will be public skating all week during March Break at the arena. Call for times.
The Caring Community Contacts program was officially launched last week. This program will help seniors who live alone and need help to maintain their independence. For more information on this program you can contact Shirley Hatt at the Fundy Nursing home at 456-4218.
The by-election for Blacks is fast approaching to fill the seat vacated by former deputy mayor David Wilkinson. I haven’t heard of any candidates yet but I’m sure there will be at least one. Interest seems to be very low and I suspect if there is more than one candidate voter turnout will be low.
Well it’s March break for the students and spring break for employees at Connors who were laid of this week. The lay off is expected to last for month as there is a lot of stock in the warehouses. An announcement was made last week about Connors operations in Grand Manan. Apparently operations will be scaled back this summer as it was announced that there would be no night shift at that plant this summer because of the amount of inventory in stock. An unknown number of workers will be affected by this announcement. Night shift employees here in Blacks are also worried, as over the years it has been getting increasingly harder for them to get their hours needed to qualify for employment insurance. A lot of those employees have been inquiring about the new call centre coming to St George wondering when jobs will be posted for there. I haven’t seen any postings in any papers, but I have heard people have already been hired and are currently being trained in St Andrews. My advice would be for anyone interested to go to St Andrews and drop off an application.
People at Connors are mourning the loss of a long time co-worker. Alice Hicks passed away last week after a brief illness. Alice had retired from Connors a few years ago where she worked for some 25 years. Alice was head of quality control there and she did an excellent job. Anybody who knew her and everybody who worked there did know she played by the book and took pride in her job. There will never be anybody else like her. I had the privilege of working with Alice for one year at Connors and also recently up until her death I again had the privilege of working with her at the Health Centre where she was working as a casual. I asked her when she came to Fundy why she was working again after retiring from Connors and she said she needed to keep busy and she did right up until her passing. In her short time at Fundy she made a lot of new friends and will be greatly missed.
