Housing at UCI

This page is about on-campus housing at UCI. As every UCI students know, off-campus housing in Irvine is relatively expensive, and the chance of living on-campus is minimal. However, being the freshman that I am, I am guaranteed on-campus housing for a year, and luckily, I will still live on-campus next year. Although I've had bad roomates experiences, I am still willing to live on-campus with roomates due to convenience and inexpensive rents. I hope by the time you're done viewing my page, you will know more about on-campus housing at UCI. Enjoy. ZOTS!

 Arroyo Vista

I was supposed to live in Arroyo Vista but due to some unjustification from the housing lady, she switched me from Arroyo Vista to Mesa Court, one of the freshman residence halls. Luckily, I will be able to live there during the summer and academic year. Arroyo Vista is the newest housing complex in UCI, although there are some leaking roofs and pipes from some of the halls. It is one of the nicest looking housing communities on-campus and there are 35 houses with 16, 24, or 32 residents each. Many of the houses are for upper-division students, and a limited number of first-year students. The themes of the houses are of the following:

Middle Earth

Middle Earth houses approximately 1,550 students in 24 halls. The names of the halls and other facilities were selected from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The halls are divided into 6 clusters or theme areas of four halls and offer classes associated with their names.

Middle Earth was built in three phases:

Phase I opened in 1974 with seven halls:  Hobbiton, Isengard, Lorien, Mirkwood, Misty Mountain, Rivendell, and The Shire. Brandywine Commons, and Brandywine Student Center (BSC) are also in Middle Earth.

Phase II opened in 1989-90. It includes 13 halls:  Balin, Harrowdale, Whispering Wood, Woodhall, Calmindon, Grey Havens, Aldor, Rohan, Gondolin, Snowbourn, Elrond, Shadowfax, and Quenya. Phase II also includes  Pippin dining commons, the housing office, Helm's Deep fitness room, and Bucklebury Library.

Phase III opened in Fall 2000 and includes four halls:  Crickhollow, Evenstar, Oakenshield, and Valimar.

Every hall houses between 45-75 residents. Most rooms are double occupancy, however Quenya has  60 single rooms, and there are some tripled rooms in the Phase II halls. Rooms are fully furnished with beds, wardrobes, desks, bookcases, chairs, and trash cans. With the exception of  Rivendell (an all-women's hall), each hall is coed. Halls are divided into five "suites" consisting of five to seven rooms, one or two bathrooms, and a study room (available in most suites). Both single-sex and coed suites are available. In coed suites, separate bathrooms are provided for men and women. Residents may request either single-sex or coed suites.

Each hall contains a main living room with a TV, a small kitchen, and laundry facilities. An undergraduate Resident Advisor (RA) is assigned to each hall. The RA is responsible for overseeing the hall, and is available to assist and guide residents in their transition to University life. Telephone service is available in each room. Residents directly contact Pacific Bell, the phone company, to have a phone line activated, and Pacific Bell is onsite during move-in weekend.  Ethernet connections are available in all rooms. Residents can use the InterIrvine network to access e-mail, connect to UCInet (the campus backbone), and use the Internet.
