Their Story

Monica Rae finally convinced Ivan to try a square dance class in January of 1993 through the "rowdy" Sierra Hillbillies in Santa Clarita. It took only one night – Ivan was hooked! Before they graduated from their beginning class, they started their first calling class with caller/instructor Arlen Miller. By the time they graduated from calling school in December of 1993, they were already doing guest tips at local clubs. The Steins’ initiation dance was November 25, 1994 for the Sierra Hillbillies.

In May, 1995 they were awarded the Supreme Audio scholarship by Bill and Peggy Heyman, owners of Supreme Audio/Hanhurst’s Tape and Record Service and attended a second calling school with Deborah Parnell and Frank Lescrinier.

In January 1996, Ivan and Monica Rae began teaching their first class with the Sierra Hillbillies and in January of 1997, they started teaching square dance in conjunction with the Golden Oak Adult School.

Ivan and Monica Rae have called at the California State Conventions, the Jerry Lewis MDA dance-a-thon in Phoenix and the Nationals in San Antonio. Before Monica's parents retired from teaching and cueing rounds, Ivan and Monica Rae mde summer trips to North Carolina to call for the Mountain Mixers in Linvelle-Land Harbor.

Monica Rae and Ivan call through Plus, enjoy doing duets and love to do hoedowns or "one night stands" for people who don’t know how to dance, but think it might be fun to do at a party. Monica also really enjoys teaching beginning classes.

Ivan and Monica Rae have been members of Callerlab since 1994 and through that membership are licensed by BMI and ASCAP. They are currently the caller coordinators for Interclub and Monica Rae is Vice President of Western Callers Association.
