You'll start in your house in Pallet Town. Walk over to your PC and withdraw your Potion. Go outside. There are other houses but you don't need to check them out yet. Go up onto a grassy path. Professor Oak will stop you and drag you into his lab, where he will give you and your rival a choice of three Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. They all have their advantages: Bulbasaur has the highest HP, Squirtle has the best Defense, and Charmander has the best Attack. It doesn't matter which one you pick; they are all good. On your way out, Rival will challenge you. If your Pokémon gets weak, revive it with your Potion. After you beat him, head to Rival's House and pick up a Town Map from his sister. Then it's off to Route One!

Heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center if needed. Then go to the Pokémon Mart and pick up Oak's Parcel. Deliver it to him back at his lab and you and Rival will recieve a Pokédex. Then go back to Viridian City.
