How safe is safe?

Just this past summer, I went to Taiwan, and I went to a theme park called Leofoo Village. Coincidentally, it was pouring rain. There was also thunder and lightening, which caused a temporary power outage. My cousins and I went to the office to see if we could get a refund, since we only went on one ride. However, later on some more people came in arguing. A lady was crying, saying how she and her children along with two other inner tube boats were stranded in the water for half an hour, with no one going to rescue them. Another man described how many people were trapped in a ride which was underground, and it was so stuffy it was hard to breathe. This got me thinking, how safe are the things we often take for granted? How can we ensure that big commercial organizations maintain the necessary safety precautions to protect their customers? I'm sure safety issues extend far beyond theme parks. Well, if you guys have any input, email me at kerwinguy@yahoo.com. Please put "theme parks" in the subject line. As always, please let me know if you mind having your name and city and state published along with your input.
