Washington, D.C. Restaurants

I haven’t had a chance to try as many restaurants in America’s capital city as I would like, but here are a few places to get you started. You gotta figure any city Bill Clinton lives in has to have good food.

I didn’t know this, but Washington, DC is known for its Ethiopian restaurants. If you’ve never tried it (and inevitable tacky jokes aside) Ethiopian cuisine is one of my favorites. Very flavorful and exotic and you get to eat with your fingers. Among the many Ethiopian places in DC, Meskererm has one of the highest Zagat’s ratings for food quality. I have had better at an "Eritrean" restaurant in San Francisco, but Meskererm is otherwise the best Ethiopian food I have had. Located at 2434 18th St, it’ll cost you about $20-25 per person for dinner. If you’ve never tried it before, get one of the combination plates. Food is served on a large piece of fermented bread and it comes with even more of this bread. You break off a piece of bread and use it to scoop up the food. Trust me, it is wonderful.

Haad Thai: 1100 New York NW (on 11th between H and New York). Located across from the Convention Center, this Thai restaurant is quite good. It isn’t as spectacular or as cheap as Saladang in Pasadena, California, but is quite good Thai food. I particularly liked the Larb, which I haven’t found at all Thai restaurants I have been to, but is quite tasty—a tangy chicken dish. They also serve pretty much any other Thai dish you like and the ingredients are quite fresh. Expect about $20 per person for dinner.

Capitol City Brewing Company: Also located across from the Convention Center in the same block as Haad Thai. Good microbrewed beer (I particularly like their Porter) and good pub food. The have good soft pretzels and I like their BBQ pulled chicken sandwich. They overload it with meat so it is impossible to eat it neatly.

Coco Loco is a pretty good Brazilian restaurant in the Chinatown area (810 7th St NW near H St.). I particularly liked the appetizers, but the meat they serve is quite good. Not spectacular, but quite satisfying anyway.
