WYADUCK here....
Okay, as I mentioned, only two titles were still un-guessed at the time
of this writing (5:40PM - Pacific Time, Aug 15). You guys really
impressed me with how many you got, how many times you came close, and
how insightful even the incorrect guesses were.
But, without further ado, here is Vonnegut's personal reading
recommendations:
The first list was as follows:
1) Bible: Genesis, Jonah, Job, Sermon on the Mount
2) Voltaire -- Candide (unguessed)
3) Flaubert -- Madame Bovary
4) Twain -- Life on The Mississippi
------------------------
Within minutes, a second fax appeared with this P.S.:
The Amendments to the United States Constitution
The Diary of Anne Frank
------------------------
Then, a couple of days later, Vonnegut offered one final suggestion, the
only title other than Candide which remained unguessed:
"Lord Jim" by Joseph Conrad
------------------------
So there you have it. Professor Vonnegut's syllabus. Thanks again for
playing our little game. (I sort of feel like this was the "Woodstock"
of the Vonnegut Newsgroup: Everyone had a good time for a few days and
there was no violence.)
I encourage any follow-up comments re: the contents of this list. What
do ya think? Surprises? etc.
Cheers,
W.
