WYADUCK here...

Still in NY. I have just a moment, so here's a couple more tidbits from my weekend with KV:

--I asked him if he were interested in seeing "Saving Private Ryan" and he answered with a quick "no." I didn't press for an explanation. I wouldn't read too much into this. Knowing Kurt, it could be as simple as not wanting to stand in a long line.

One of his favorite movies about WWII is still "A Midnight Clear" -- a film I had sent him as it was directed by Keith Gordon who would later direct my film adaptation of "Mother Night." Kurt flipped for this film as it so closely resembled his own experience during the war in numerous ways.

He talked about the movie successes of Spielberg or "Titanic" etc., and said that mass acceptance on this level puts to shame such past conquerers as Alexander the Great.

-- Speaking as an anthropologist, he'd always wondered what it was about women that can so easily capture the attention of males. He recently figured out what it is: Their smile.

-- In his lectures, he's put to audiences Freud's question about "what do women want." Kurt then answers this question by saying, "They want a whole lot of people to talk to." A woman recently told him he got it exactly right. She then asked him what do men want. Kurt and I both pondered this and came up with this answer: Peace and quiet.

-- Kurt thinks "This Is Spinal Tap" is one of the best comedies ever. He loves when they get lost in the back stage maze of corridors. He also thinks that "Sons of the Desert" is the ultimate Laurel & Hardy film.

-- Here's a clue as to the level of humor we enjoy when we're together: One afternoon we polished of five cobs of corn. I told him that over the next several days, whenever I sat on the can, I'd be reminded of our lunch that afternoon. We got a good laugh off of that. I then told him that a friend of mind refers to that phenomenon as the Corn-Speckled Brown Trout.

We laughed for several minutes at that one because we're very sophisticated.

Hope I haven't shattered any illusions here.

Cheers, -W.
