Mary Frances Zambreno writes pleasant YA fantasy with a strong vein of mystery. Her endings are usually surprising, and although she's only written two books, they are both interesting reads.
SORCERER DUET
This consists of A Plague of Sorcerers and Journeyman Wizard. The protagonist is young Jermayne (?) who unfortunately has a skunk for a familiar. Their adventures with a plague that attacks sorcerers and several murders are the topic that occupy the two books.
