Setting of the Book
The book takes place on an island that looks likea boat. The island is
never actually placed in any specific place. The beach near
the lagoon with warm water is where Ralph and Piggy first
meet, and find the conch as well. The first meeting, and
the following ones, are all held on the "natural platform
of fallen trees." There's also a mountain on the island,
which is first scaled by Ralph, Simon, and Jack as they
attempt to explore the island. The signal fire was supposed
to be there. The "beast" (dead pilot) lands on the mountain
top.
Also on the island is a jungle with vines
called creepers. The pig trails within the jungle are where
Jack and the hunters hunt for pigs to eat. Ralph is also
hunted in the jungle in the end. Castle Rock is where the
savages make their headquarters in the end. Piggy crashes
to his death near this castle when he's hit by a boulder
that Roger lets loose. A fruit orchard is also present on
the island, and that's where the fruit is gotten, and where
Simon feeds the littluns.
Quote from Chapter 1: The Sound of the Shell
It was roughly boat-shaped: humped near this end with behind them
the jumbled descent to the shore. On either side rocks, cliffs,
treetops and a steep slope: forward there. the length of the boat, a tamer
descent, tree-clad, with hints of pink: and then the jungly flat of
the island, dense green, but drawn at the end to a pink tail.
There, where the island petered out in the water, was another
island; a rock, almost detached, standing like a fort, facing
them across the green with one bold, pink bastion.
