COURSE OF STUDY OUTLINE

REGISTRATION

In order to apprentice as a projectionist in the Province of Ontario, you must be licensed as an Apprentice Projectionist.

The requirements to be licensed as a Projectionist in the Province of Ontario have been done away with.

( As of Feb. 9th 2001)

1. NEW APPLICANTS

A medical certificate providing evidence of physical ability to handle projection and fire fighting equipment; Satisfactory evidence that you do not suffer from any physical or mental disability that would prevent you from operating projection equipment safely; Proof of age (copy of birth certificate or driver's licence); and A cheque or money order in the amount of $25.00 made payable to the Minister of Finance.

2. RENEWAL OF LICENCE

An Apprentice Projectionist Licence is valid for twleve months. Applications for renewal will be mailed to registrants approximately 90 days prior to expiry. Renewal of registration together with a cheque or money order for $25.00 made payable to the Minister of Finance must be made at least ten working days prior to expiry.

COURSE OF STUDY OUTLINE FOR SECOND CLASS PROJECTIONIST EXAMINATIONS

FILM HANDLING

Ability to use tape splicer . Knowledge of repairs to film perforations . Understanding of the cause and effect of "Run Off", "Hooked Sprockets", "Rain Effect" . Understanding of the cause and effect of emulsion build-up in gate . Understanding of the problems of notched film perforations in automated systems

PROJECTOR

Understanding of the action, parts, and operations of a Geneva Type Intermittent . Knowledge of the types of shutters, how to set a shutter, the action and function of a shutter . Knowledge of the function of pad rollers and how to set up same . Knowledge of the purpose of lateral guide rollers . Understanding of the reasons for the projected picture to be unsteady

XENON ARC LAMPS (only if you use xenon)

Ability to name the parts and approximate voltage at each level of such lamps . Knowledge of the circuit breaker and its advantages . Understanding of the definitions for electrical terms: A.C./D.C. . In-depth knowledge of xenon lamps, including the reason some lamps utilize stand-by current . Ability to install and focus new xenon bulb . Ability to explain the Tesla Coil and its functions . Knowledge of how the various types of arcs are stabilized . Understanding of trouble shooting methods, including break down and procedures to solve problems when bulb will not ignite

CARBON ARC LAMP (only if you use carbon)

Knowledge of the carbon arc lamp circuit and the ability to show connections for power supply, ammeter, and feed motor . Knowledge of the use of carbons . Knowledge of the reasons for carbons to be copper coated, and the problems relating to dampness . Knowledge of rotary and water cooled arcs

ELECTRICITY

Understanding of Series and Parallel circuits . Knowledge of a V.O.M. Meter and how to use same . Knowlege of OHMS LAW and Electrical Term

SOUND

Understanding of the way in which optical sound is reproduced from the sound tract to the speaker . Understanding of the action of a photo electric cell . Identify sound formats, e.g. Optical, DTS . Understanding of the reason D.C. is preferred for exciter lamp power. . Knowledge of the components of the power supply . Understanding of the problems pertaining to exciter lamps and how to focus same . Understanding of the problems, causes and trouble shooting of "Motor-boating" . Understanding of the problems and trouble shooting in sound systems

OPTICS

Knowledge of the different types of lenses; how lenses are joined . Understanding of the elements of a lens . Understanding of the types of arc lamp reflectors

AUTOMATION

Understanding of the "Fail Safe" device . Knowledge of a proximity detector . Knowledge of a relay and how it functions; ability to describe the operation of its contacts, and whether or not it is connected in a series or parallel with the manual switches . Understanding of the use of metallic tape in programming the automation . Knowledge of the location of metallic tape in regards to the film running through the projector . Ability to show how to program automation boards and how they operate . Ability to show how to prepare a print for tower or platter performance in a totally automated theatre

PROJECTIONIST EXAMINATIONS

Examinations are conducted by appointment at 1075 Millwood Road, Toronto, Ontario M4G 1X6. Phone: (416) 314-3626 or call toll free at 1-800-268-6024. . An applicant must hold an Apprentice Licence for a minimum of 30 days from date of issue. We also require a letter stating as to the ability of the applicant's operation of the projection equipment and signed by the licensed projectionist. . If an examination is failed in the first attempt, a candidate is not eligible to try a second time without completing further work as an Apprentice Projectionist as required by the Director. Failure to pass the examination on a second attempt renders the candidate ineligible to sit the examination at a future date, except by leave of the Director.
