Desteny shielded her eyes against the bright light in front of her. She felt as is she was floating. She looked down and saw that she was. She floated towards the light and suddenly she was in a huge, beautiful field with a bright blue sky above her. It was like she was in a dream.
"Desteny," called a slft voice.
Desteny turned around and saw her mother. "Mom? Where am I?" Desteny asked. She gasped. "Am...am I dead?"
"Well, sort of in the middle hon," her mother answered, smiling. As her mother walked forward, her long brown hair swerld around her shoulders. She was wearing a soft blue summer dress that was blowing in the light breeze.
Desteny reached out and hugged her mother. She had been longing to do that ever since her mother had died a few years ago. Desteny then pulled away. "What do you mean 'in the middle'" she asked, confused.
"I mean, your dead, but you can go back," explained her mother.
"I want to go back," cried Desteny, not hesitating.
"Wait just a minute," laughed Desteny's mom. "I have to talk to you." She motioned for Desteny to sit. They sat down in the soft, long grass. "Now hon, you realize that both A.J. and Nick like you very much. Deciding between them will be hard but you will end up happy with either of them." Her mother smiled.
Desteny sighed. "It's hard. I think I really like Nick, but I don't want to hurt A.J."
Her mother laughed. "Honey, A.J. can have any girl he wants. Right now, he wants you. But he will get over you. I promise," her mother explained.
"Thanks mom." Desteny hugged her again.
"Also, you're not going to have an easy life. It going to have lots of hardships but with your friends and the right guys, you will alway make it through. So when you feel like giving up, remember what I just said," she warned.
"I will mom," said Desteny.
"Well, you better get back," her mother said.
"I love you mom," smiled Desteny.
"I love you too. And take care of your dad for me. And remember, I'll always be watching you." She kissed Desteny, then Desteny felt herself falling and felt like she was dreaming. She heard the doctors talking about her. "I'm sorry. She's gone. There's nothing we can do. She's dead." She heard Melody crying and she heard Nick sobbing too.
She smiled and drifted down into her body. She then took a deep breath, opened her eyes and weakly said "Wanna bet."
Melody stopped crying and screamed "Desteny! Your alive!" She ran over to Desteny, close behind her with Nick.
"Man, you scared the shit out of us," cried Nick, weak with releif.
"And you thought I wouldn't come back? I'm shocked." Desteny smiled weakly.
"I don't believe it," said a doctor. "Her heart was dead for 5 minutes. That has never been heard of."
"You didn't know Desteny," Melody cried happily. Teh doctors just chuckled
"What time is it?" asked Desteny.
"It's 1:05 in the morning," replied Melody.
"No wonder I'm tired," yawned Desteny.
"Accutly, after staring death in the eye, an inch away, you're bound to be tired. Well, we have to do some tests so if your friends will kindly leave." The doctor held up a needle. Desteny's eyes filled with fear. She looked at Nick and Melody.
"Don't let them put that in me. I hate needles," she said in a tiny voice.
Nick and Melody laughed but they left the room. When they got outside, they heard a yell from Desteny and then a crash of a needle breaking on the floor.
"Looks like Desteny's back," laughed Melody.
About one month later, Desteny was getting ready for her first day back to school. There were only a few days left until summer break so Desteny decided to go back. Desteny was just about to leave when the phone rang. She cursed under her breath and raced for it. "Hello," she said, a bit out of breath from her wild dash over pets.
"It's nice to hear your beautiful voice again Dest," said a familer voice.
"Nick," Desteny cried into the reciever. "It's you."
"No, it's an alien from outer space," joked Nick.
"Very funny. Why are you calling me," asked Desteny, running her hands through her hair.
"I miss you," Nick said lovingly.
Desteny's heart swelled. "I miss you too."
"But we won't have to miss each other for long," said Nick happily.
"Why?" Desteny asked suspisously.
"'Cause BsB has a vaction coming. A LONG one. And I decided I wanted to spend it with you. I haven't seen you since you got out of the hospital a month ago." Nick explained.
"Nick, really?" Desteny cried excitedly.
"Yup, it starts in one week. You'll be out of school by then won't you?" asked Nick.
"Yup, I only have two days left including...AHHH!" Desteny screamed.
"What? What? What's the matter?" asked Nick panicking.
"School, I forgot. I'm gonna be late for school," cried Desteny, hitting her head as she remembered.
"Oops, I'm sorry. It's 4 o'clock pm out here. I forgot about the time change," Nick apoligized.
"It ok. Your worth missing a bit of school," Desteny said.
"Aww, thanks. Now I feel all special," laughed Nick.
"I would love to talk to you more but I really better go. How about I phone you on Saterday. I have no more school thaen," suggested Desteny.
"No, I thought you had school on the weekend," joked Nick.
"When you get out here remind me to smack you. So I'll talk to ya soon," said Desteny.
"Bye," said Nick.
"Bye," said Desteny and hung up. Then she made a wild dash to school, not caring that much if she was late. Nick was worth it.
One week later, Desteny was on the computer working on her latest story, trying to keep busy. 'Today is the day Nick and Brian arrive,' thought Desteny. She was so excited she couldn't remember who to spell 'conversation.' Brian had asked Desteny not to tell Melody that they were coming. Desteny had agreed, knowing that it would be a lot of fun if she didn't know. Desteny smiled to herself. Desteny stopped typing and slipped into a daydream. She couldn't wait to see Nick again. He promised that he would be spending tonns of time with her. She missed holding him and kissing him and just being with him. She was in love.
Just then, the doorbell rang, scaring Desteny out of ther daydream. She jumped up from the computer and ran to the door. Smiling she threw open the door and said "May I help you"
Nick rushed in the door and threw his arms around her, envoloping her in a hug. He even lifted her up a bit during the hug.
"I just help myself," said Nick, kissing her deeply.
"You two make me sick," said a voice. Desteny looked behind Nick and saw Brian smiling at her.
"I missed you too Brian," she said laughing, giving him a hug.
"That's more like it," he said.
Desteny looked at Nick and saw he was staring at the bottem of her stairs, where she'd been lying after her fall.
"Nick," she said quietly as she slid her arms around his waist. "Try to forget about that night. I try to."
Nick hugged her tightly and kissed her on the cheek. "I'll never forget you lying there, Melody screaming to call 911 because you weren't breathing," he sighed.
"Speaking of Melody," Brian said, breaking the silence. "Where is she?"
The doorbell rang at that moment and Nick and Brian turned to Desteny.
"Totally unreahersed," she said, trying not to laugh.
"Well open up the door loverboy," said Nick, smiling. Brian gave him a dirty look and opened the door. As he was opening the door, Desteny covered her her ears and motioned for Nick to do the same thing because a second later, they heard a scream that could have broken all the windows.
"Brian," Melody cried as she flung her arms around his neck.
"I guess your happy to see me," guessed Brian.
Melody turned to Desteny and broke her grip around Brian's neck. "You brat. How dare you not tell me Brian and Nick were coming for a visit," she accused smiling.
Desteny pointed at Brian. "He put me up to it," she smiled. Brian gave her the inicent look.
"So where are you guys staying," asked Melody, who had her arms wrapped around Brian's waist.
"We're staying at the Johnatel hotel, so we're close to you guys," answered Brian.
"By the way, how long are you guys staying?" asked Desteny.
"Well, we have to have a concert here in a few days, so the holiday hasn't officaly started but after the concert, we get 3 weeks off to spend with you," explained Nick.
"Wow, that is a long time," Desteny said happily.
"Yup, and we got the night off so Brian and I planned something special," said Nick, smiling slyly.
"Oh really?" asked Desteny.
"Yup, but we're not gonna tell you what we have planned 'cause it's a surprise," answered Brian, giving Nick 'the look'.
"But right now, I'm staved. Let's go get pizza," suggested Nick.
Brian smacked Nick on the shoulder. "Your always hungrey."
"I'm serious. I'm starving. I need food," cried Nick.
Desteny shook her head at him. "Let's go get some food so he'll shut up," suggested Desteny. The others quickly agreed and Nick gave Desteny a fake hurt look. She kissed him though and the look quickly disapeared.
They all went outside and jumped into Brian's jeep. As they were driving, Melody said "Did you guys know about Desteny's birthday." The guys gave her blank looks. Melody took that as they didn't know. "It's today," said Melody.
"What? Desteny, why didn't you tell us?" cried Nick.
"I didn't think it was that importent," smiled Desteny.
"Not importent?" exclaimed Brian "Like breathing isn't importent."
"Now I'm glad we have something special planned tonight," said Nick, smilng at Desteny.
"You keep talking about how you have something planned. You're making me go crazy," exclaimed Desteny. Melody laughed. "Beileve me, you don't want to make Desteny crazy."
The arrived at the pizza place and they all sat down and ordered. Then the conservation turned to Desteny's birthday.
"I guees we should have asked if you had anything planned tonight. I mean with your dad," said Brian.
"No, dad has been away on business. He felt really bad for having to be away on my birthday, but he'll get over it," Desteny smiled.
"Perfect," said Nick. The three of them looked at Nick suspusly. "I mean, it good that you don't have anything planned." Nick blushed.
"Nicholos Gene Carter. Are you blushing?" asked Melody, teasing him.
Nick blushed deeper but he was saved by the arrival of the pizza's. Nick quickly shoved a piece of pizza in his mouth, avoding the question. Everyone laughed. Brian turned to the girls. "So how about we pic you girls up at 6:30 tonight," suggested Brian.
"Sounds good," Melody said brightly. "Pick us up at Desteny's house. I'm going over ther later."
"You are?" asked Desteny. Melody gave her the evil eye. "Oh ya, right." Everyone laughed.
"If you'll excuse me, I'll be right back," Desteny said. She stood up and left the table.
"I can't believe Desteny didn't tell us about her birthday," said Nick, whenshe was out of ear shot. "What should we get her?"
"I know just what to give her. Simple, wrap Nick up in paper and she be thrilled," Melody laughed.
Brian laughed and looked thoughful. Nick pushed him from across the table.
"Seriously though, what should we get her?" asked Brian.
Melody smiled and looked at Nick. "What she would really love, is to spend some time alone with Nick."
Nick smiled. "Well, she's getting that already."
Melody looked up and saw Desteny coming back. She motined for Nick and Brian to be quiet.
"Sorry," Desteny said. "Had to call dad. He panics if I don't call him at this time everyday."
"It's ok," said Brian.
They chatted started chatting about the guys tour, what had been happening with the girls and stuff like that.
The waitor came by and picked up the empty pizza pans and put the billy down. They paid and left the resterant. They climbed into the jeep and the guys dropped the girls off at their houses, saying good bye until later.
