Desteny didn't stop running until she reached the park in the middle of the town where she lived. When she reached the main park pathway, she slowed down to a trance like walk. With tears blurring her vision, she walked through the beautiful park on the path by the blossoming flowers. She walked over to the tree where she and John had first kissed. She slowly lowered herself, in a trance, to the ground under the tree. Desteny leaned up against the tree trunk and stared straight ahead. Tears falling from her face, Desteny thought of the first time she had met John. She remembered clearly even though it was several years ago. She had gotten along great with him the first time she had seen him walking in the park. She had been 14 years old and he had been walking with her good friend Chris. When Chris had seen her, he brought John over and had introduced them. They had become great friends with each other right away.
Desteny blinked thought the tears and buried her face in her hands. She sobbed uncontrolibley for a long time. Fiannly, the tears slowed and Desteny gasped for breath.
Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up to see her father kneeling beside her.
"Honey, I heard over the radio. I phoned the school and they said you ran out after the principal announced it on the P.A. system. I thought you would come here," her dad explained softly.
"My friends told me, but I thought it was a joke. Then the principal came on and..." Desteny buried her face in her hands again, sobbing in pain.
"Come on hon. Let's go home," her dad said quietly.
Desteny slowly stood up and followed her dad as they walked out of the park. Desteny fell silent and stared down at the sidewalk. Although the sky was still blue and the birds were still singing, it was grey and lifeless in Desteny's heart.
When they arrived home, Desteny's little manx cat, Cookies and her cream colored mutt, Cream, rushed up and started jumping on Desteny's legs. Desteny slowly walked up the stairs to her room not even noticing her pets jesters. Desteny shut her door softly and lowered herself to the edge of her bed. She had no tears left to cry. Desteny flopped back on her back as she stared up at the ceiling. Everywhere she looked, Desteny saw John's face. It was like his picture was stamped in her heart, forever. She turned her head and looked at a picture on her dresser of her and John in front of a beautiful waterfall in the park surrounded by flowers. They were smiling and hugging each other, without a care in the world
"That day was so beautiful. I wish I could got back and live that day again," Desteny mumered. She turned her head back up to the ceiling and soon fell into a troubled sleep.
One week after the accident, Desteny's father was getting desperate. Desteny wasn't eating, she barely came out of her room, didn't talk hardly, and was not paying attention in school. Basicly, he life was falling apart at the seems. Desteny's father was sitting on the couch watching T.V., worrying about his daughter and trying to figure out what to do when a commercial came on.
"Find out what is in your future, problems with loved ones." At that her dad's ears perked up. "Call phyic hotline now. 529-****."
Desteny's father sat back in his chair and thought. 'Am I really that desperate....yes, I am.' He jumped off the couch and raced to the phone and dialed.
Desteny was lying on her bed, face down. Her pillow was soaked with tears so she had moved down off of her pillow. She couldn't stop thinking of John and she was shaking from all the energy she used from crying.
Just then she heard a soft knock on her door.
"Come in," mumbled Desteny. She looked up to see her dad slip into her room.
"Honey, I know you're really upset and I really hate to see you like this. You're going to get a laugh out of this. I was so worried about you I called a phyic hotline and asked them what to do." He expected her to laughed but she stayed lying down on her bed. Her dad cleared his throat. "Hon, that's the part your suppose to laugh at," her father said. Desteny's father sat down on the edge of the bed. "Hon, do you want to know what she said about you?"
Desteny didn't respond.
Her father cleared his throat again. "Well, she said that in about a week, you would realized that John would have wanted you to go on with you're life and you'll cheer up. And in about 2 months, you'll meet the man your destend to be with. Basicly, the man of your dreams. What do you think?" Desteny's father looked down at her.
Desteny rolled over, sat up and looked her dad in the eye. "I think you wasted your money on that stupid, phoney physic. I'll never recover from this. Ever."
With that, she got up and stormed out of her room, without looking back. Soon her dad heard the front door slam shut. He sighed, shaking his head. "What am I going to do?" he asked himself.
