Greetings from Missouri!
Owney had a very nice stay in Missouri. He arrived at the end of the day on Tuesday, October 1st, arriving a day early this year!!! Wow!! Owney hung out with Mrs. Hicks after school. On Wednesday morning, Owney met our class as they came into the classroom. He watched as we worked on our Morning Work and listened to our principal's message. This week we read a story about a photographer, so our writing project was to take pictures of different things in our classroom. One of the students chose to take Owney's picture for his project. Owney was very proud to pose for his picture. He went with us to a special presentation we attended and listened very well, just like all the boys and girls in our class. When we went to music, he had great fun watching all the cool things we do in our music class. Owney had lunch with Mrs. Hicks and then waited for the boys and girls to finish art class. (They were painting, so Owney decided to stay with Mrs. Hicks than to chance getting paint all over his fur!)
After math, we celebrated Owney's visit with cornbread muffins, since Missouri grows corn, and lemonade, as we have such hot, sticky summers here. Owney loved his treats. He posed for pictures with the class and went visiting around the school with some students, meeting lots of students and teachers. Finally, Owney sat very quietly while we all read for our DEAR Time and we took our tests for Accelerated Reader. He loved to see all the boys and girls reading soooo many books. Then we all said good-bye and sent Owney on his way to Arkansas. What a wonderful day spent with Owney!

Owney arrived in Arkansas on October 8th. Our class had a great time visiting with him. He was more than happy to share interesting information about his journey. Owney started off the day by reading with us during Accelerated Reader time. Then he went with us to our science lab where he learned about thrust. He even made propeller planes and did some experiments. Next he visited our computer lab where he learned about math and reading. He was very tired from a full morning, so while the students went to recess, Owney took a nap. That afternoon Owney helped us gather information to put on our postcards and type them on our quick pads. We really enjoyed Owney's visit. We hope that Alabama enjoys his visit as much as we did.

HI Family,
I have been having a great time at Inglenook Elementary in Birmingham. These southern children know how to treat a pup. We made candy corn men today, graphed candy corn math and juicy treats, read in their books, learned about migrating monarchs and then dropped everything to read for 25 minutes in the afternoon. Their teacher Ms. Kelley put me with their reading buddies so that I would get to sit with someone. See if you can find me. Ms. Kelley has some more pictures that she will send soon.
Also, the children were making post cards to send everyone. They will go out in the mail soon with me.

The weather here is fall like. The leaves are really green but beginning to change. We have had a great time and I am on my way to Sperry, OK. They gave me a new keychain from the University of Alabama and a magnet for my keepsake from Auburn University another university in southern Alabama.
See you soon in OK!
Owney
Here is Owney looking over the map we made of all his visits. I have two portaits of him that you might want to make. We have not received postcards from all the states he has visited. We only have three postcards. If you can gently remind them to send their postcards my children will enjoy getting them. Thanks for a great project. He may make it to the local newspaper. If he does, I will send you a copy for sure.

Here are his treasures so far, can you find yours?

Owney sends greeting from Oklahoma,
Due to delays in delivery from the central mail department, parent/teacher conferences and lack of computer access I have not been able to communicate.
Owney meet Mrs. Patterson's Pre-1st class this morning and then spent the rest of the day with them in their travels around the school. Because of the rain, while they had indoor recess, Owney visited one of the third grade classes. The students shared the story of Owney with all the first grade students. Miss Cindy and Mr. Harchar were thrilled to see Owney again.
Last year when Owney visited he helped them distribute awards during the monthly awards assembly. Some of the first graders remembered Owney from his visit last year also.
Owney spent some time in the library talking with the library guinea pig named Goldie and another dog. Owney wished that he had had more time to visit with all his friends from last year but school was out and it was time to attend Project Essence which is the after-school program for elementary students. After his snack in the cafeteria, he spent time in the library visiting with the 1st, 2nd and 5th graders when they came in for videos. Because of conferences, students could not use regular classrooms for studying and activities.
After Project Essence, Owney attended conferences with Mrs. Mosier, the librarian and watched for more of his friends. Owney will miss Oklahoma but he is looking forward to his next adventures.
Owney will be off in the mail tomorrow morning. It takes about 3 days to get a package mailed through the school system., so I will be taking him to the local post office myself.

Dear Owney Family:
Owney made it to Kansas on Halloween! He saw all his old friends and made some new ones. We enjoyed looking at all the souvenirs from his travels. The straw hat was the best! Owney left for Nebraska yesterday. Look for Kansas postcards, they will be coming soon!

Owney had a busy day on Thursday. The class was busy, and he enjoyed seeing the kids and teachers. The day started with the "box opening." Looking at the items, and some picture taking. He was visiting in the Fourth grade room. We hope the group picture comes out well, and it can go in the school year book. Our school was out early,1:30pm, as there were parent conferences from 3 - 7 pm. Mrs. Foster took Owney and his box of information to the school library. There was a Book Fair going on. He had his picture taken reading the Clifford the Big Red Dog books. Then he sat and greeted parents and children as they came to the Book Fair. He went home overnight with Mrs. Foster. Then, off to the post office and on to South Dakota! We are putting the student made postcards through the laminator, as they will not lose the information from them, The fourth graders had to find the "Facts about Nebraska" online. They had to create a word document make it small to fit the cards. The art work was done in art class. They should all be ready to send Monday...but since it's a holiday..they won't go out until Tuesday. Mrs. Betty Foster

The second graders at Grandview Elementary in Rapid City, SD, were so excited to find my box. They had fun looking at all my souvenirs. Mrs. Dupre' read the Owney story and then groups of kids took turns showing me to other classes. They told about the real Owney of long ago, showed a map of postcards they have received, showed their postcard album, showed the book that classes have signed, and they showed ME. I really liked all the attention I got. It's lots of fun to get out of the box and see things!
After lunch, two postmen came to talk to us. They had been to see Owney in the Smithsonian, so they were very interested in my project. They told us about unusual things that have been shipped through the mail, including all the pieces for a house and a young girl. They said it was cheaper to ship her as mail on the stagecoach than as a passenger, and she rode with the passengers anyway. They also brought the kids some Post Office booklets. We watched the Animal Planet video of Owney from several years ago also. We all were interested in the way the mail was sorted on the moving trains long ago.
I went to PE class today and watched from a safe place. Later in the afternoon, we had a little party while I had my picture taken with every boy and girl in the class. I like the SD pin and Rapid City pin I am now wearing. Ms. Cowan, the principal, gave me a Grandview Cougars pin. Everyone signed my book as they were leaving for the day. Lots of kids gave me a good-bye hug. I hope to them again next year!

I talked to Juline from Montana and she told me that they were still on strike, so I mailed Owney to Wyoming. We enjoyed Owney on Mon. Nov. 18. My class drew pictures of dogs while we ate puppy chow. Later that day we wrote Owney poems and ate dog biscuits(Krispy bars cut the shape of dog bones). All the fourth grades watched the movie "Sounder" in the afternoon. During the movie, our local newspaper came to take Owney's picture when we placed our pin on him. The students enjoyed seeing Owney's picture in the paper. Thanks for your efforts to coordinate Owney's trip. Debbie

He cheered the teams on as a good sport for all the sudents. Everyone had lots of fun with Owney. Hope you enjoy the pictures we put in the box with Owney. Well, Owney made to Colorado! Owney had a blast learning all about colorado and the mountains. He learned we live right at the foot of Pikes Peak which has an elevation of 14,110 feet! Luckily he didn't get altitude sickness. He did get to meet our Fourth and Fifth Graders and their stuffed aninal friends. Another successful trip to Colorado!
