Owney will be in the mail tomorrow or Thursday, depending on the weather. We're expecting a storm with ice and/or heavy snow.

My first grade class was so excited to for Owney to finally arrive. The have really enjoyed receiving the postcards and reading about the other states. They were so excited about each item in the box. Owney started out the day being interviewed on our school morning news show. Owney meet our principal Miss Simms. He also meet Paws and Pawlet our school bulldog mascots.

Three of our star students were interviewed about the project. Owney sat in a chair in front of our door with our classroom mascot Katie and the whole school enjoyed going by and greeting her. Owney was photographed by our Central Office staff for the district newsletter. Everyone was been very excited about everything we are learning. Owney enjoyed reading Arthur books, Julian books, and other books. He watched us take Accelerated Reader test. He watched us count money in math. He liked lunch and playtime the best, like all first graders. He enjoyed center time. We showed him last years Fairy tale project on the web site. He went to library. He was very loved and photographed. He had his picture taken for our school web site. We added our school buttons and Kentucky pencils. Owney will be mailed to Indiana today. We hope they receive him by Friday.

Owney arrived at Otto Middle School at 1:30 yesterday after my students had left for their electives. I will send him on his way tomorrow after school. will write more later.

The Weather was very un-Michigan like on the day of Owney's arrival. We missed a record high by one degree! Owney enjoyed his 70 degree day immensely. Our normal high should have been 20 degrees cooler. Owney was shown around the school and managed to visit quite a few people. We sent him on his way quickly as we knew he was a bit behind schedule. He would have like to have visited the Mackinac Bridge, but he only had time to view it on a webcam.
You can find some Michigan webcam links on this page.
Everyone was sorry to see Owney leave.

Owney visited Timber Grove Elementary School in Owings Mill, MD, on Friday, March 21st. He got to spend the day in the computer lab and was able to visit one class from each grade. All the other children in the school stopped by the computer lab before school, on their way to lunch and after school to see Owney. Owney loved seeing all his friends at Timber Grove since he's been here before for a number of years. We took great pictures of him with our new digital camera. At the end of the day, Owney was sent on his way to Delaware.

And from the postcards:
Greetings from Baltimore, MD! Here are some things I learned from the kids at Timber Grove Elementary School about Maryland.
Capital - Annapolis
Tree - White Oak
Bird - Baltimore Orioles
Flower - Black Eyed Susan
Did you know that the Star Spangled Banner was written in Baltimore?
Go Orioles!

38 Due in Wilmington, DE 3/12/03, arrived 3/24/03

Owney visited Richey Elementary School in Newport, DE on March 24. Newport is a small (~1500) city in northern Delaware. The major employers in Newport are a Saturn assembly plant and Ciba Geigy. Delaware is the 2nd smallest state in size, but is home to many large corporations. It is known as the “Chemical Capital of the World” because Du Pont, ICI, and Hercules are headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. Now we are also a financial services center. Many large credit card companies have their headquarters here: Discover Card, MBNA, Bank One, Chase, Fleet, etc. The pharmaceutical industry is also growing in Delaware. There are many vegetable and fruit farms in the southern part of our state.
In the summer, Delaware’s beaches are popular with people from all over the USA. Dover, which is our capital, has a large US Air Force base. The C-5 Galaxy aircraft call the airbase home. Unfortunately it also serves as the east coast mortuary for the US Armed Forces. Space suits for the shuttle astronauts are also made in Delaware. We hope you will come to Delaware and discover our “small wonders!”

Even more news from Owney:

Hi Everyone,
I had a great time in Delaware. My 5th grade friends were discussing the Spanish-American War when I arrived. I knew about Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. They took me to lunch and the library. I took part in their chorus practice. We had a howling good time! I was able to watch a football game at recess. I played patty-cake with my friends. Most of the girls were dog-sitting me. I got to eat cookies and potato chips. Yummy! Some of the kids liked my blue eyes. Most of the kids thought I was cute. The pins on my back were hurting me beacuse everyone was hugging me so tightly, even the boys.
The day I left I had to get 18 pictures taken with each of my friends. The socks from Tennessee kept me warm. Everyone in the class loved my socks, and wished they could buy a pair! I got many compliments about my hat, lei, and new jewelry. I really liked my new Delaware pin. It was very warm, too warm for a cold weather pooch like me! The postmaster in Newport promised to take extra-good care of me to get me ready for the trip to New Jersey. Good-bye to the first state!
Love, Owney

39 Due in Absecon, NJ 3/17/03, arrived 3/31/03

I sent Owney off to NY yesterday afternoon. Hopefully he'll arrive tomorrow. The Miss America Organization was very cooperative! They located all the information about the project and were more than happy to allow Erika Harold, Miss America 2003, to have her picture taken with Owney. I'll attach the photo file to this e-mail and also send you a journal writing on Owney's behalf which you can post for all to see. They're also sending me a Miss America Pin which I will forward up to one of the schools still waiting for his arrival. This has been so much fun. Thanks for organizing such a high interest and informative project.
Sincerely,
Jen Dagrosa

Hi Everyone,
I arrived at the Marsh School here in Absecon just as Ms. Dagrosa's second grade class was heading outside to erupt their paper mache' volcanoes. It was a wonderfully messy and smelly project, just the kind of thing a curious dog like me enjoys most! When we returned to the classroom, the children all took turns holding me and exploring all the exciting keepsakes that accompanied me inside my postal dog box. I got to spend an extra day here in the Garden State because I was invited to meet with a very special celebrity - Miss America 2003, Erika Harold! She won the title in Atlantic City, N.J., ten minutes from here! I was SO nervous, and she was SO smart and beautiful. She even let me try on her crown. How do I look?
Your Postal Pooch Pal,
Owney:)
