Owney Is Halfway Through His Journey

31 Minnesota
Due 2/20/02 in Waconia
Hello, everyone
I'm sorry I couldn't give warning to Iowa, or let you know when Owney was in Minnesota. Our email and computer system has been down for more than two weeks. This is the first day we can email! Owney was in Minnesota, and we had great fun with him. You'll be receiving our postcards probably in the next week.

Due 2/25/02 in Cresco, arrived 3/12/02
Owney arrived in Iowa on Mar. 12. The kids spent a long time discovering all the state items on him. The maps were very interesting to them, especially since many students haven't traveled outside Iowa. We will be sending postcards out soon. I mailed him to OK on the 13th. We love this project!!

33 South Dakota
Originally due 3/15/02 in Rapid City, arrived 3/22/02
Owney arrived at Grandview School late Friday afternoon, 3-22-02. Mrs. Dupré decided to take him to Huron, SD, for the weekend. Huron is about 300 miles from Rapid City, but Owney enjoyed the "scenic" Interstate 29 Highway. He stayed in a motel for two nights and heard a terrific South Dakota All-State Band concert. Mrs. Dupré went to hear her daughter (a bassoon player) and the rest of the 161 band members play wonderful music. Owney really enjoyed all the music, but we think he napped a little during some of the quieter moments.
Owney was able to see lots of snow in SD. We had quite a bit before he came and got several more inches on Saturday night and Sunday. It was so cold today that the children stayed in all day except for afternoon recess. (If the wind chill is below zero, we don't go out.) We had almost no snow all through the winter and very few cold days, but now in March we are really getting a lot of both.
Today was the day we started SAT testing in Rapid City, so Owney had to be very quiet during our tests. He sat on the table watching the kids do their work very carefully. Then he went to the library and really enjoyed seeing so many books. This was the first time all year that we had no overdues, so the boys and girls picked out a gigantic frog to stay in our room for the week. The frog is about twice as big as Owney. We had a little party and watched the video of Owney on Animal Planet. We also looked at lots of the stuff traveling with Owney. Our class especially liked his socks. We signed our names in Owney's book too. There are almost 900 names in the book.
We took Owney to several other classrooms and to visit our principal, Ms. Cowan. We showed him to all of our second grades (3 more), all 4 third grades, and our 5th grade buddies. We went in teams of four to show other rooms. One person carried Owney, one person had our postcard collection album, one person had the picture of the real Owney, and one person had a map that we have colored to show the states we have received postcards from. We know that Owney has been to 32 states, but we only have about 20 postcards so far.
At the end of the day, we all gave Owney a last hug and Mrs. Dupré carefully packed him in his box to travel to Oklahoma. His box was last seen at the Rapid City Post Office ready for his next adventure.

33 Oklahoma
Due 3/1/02 in Sperry, arrived 3/14/02 and again on 4/2/02
At the end of school yesterday I received Owney. I was excited but unfortunately the students were gone. Because of Parent Teacher Conferences we do not have school today and next week is the state mandated Spring Break.

Because of this scheduling snafu, Owney made a quick visit to South Dakota, then returned to Oklahoma. Here's the second Oklahoma report.

Sorry that I have not gotten information off about Owney but have been a last minute substitue for a workshop on Monday, Easter week-end and then no internet service at school today. Owney left Ok yesterday afternoon. Due to the Easter holiday, I was nto able to get him mailed til after school.
Owney visited the Pre-first class of Sperry Elementary. I introduced Owney to the students and they were very proud to wear the South Dakota pins that Owney brought with him. Owney went to PE, visited the computer lab and visited bht principals in the K-1 and 2-5 buildings. The day ended with Owney being the guest of honor at the monthly awards assembly. He helped Mr. Harchar the principal and Mrs. Reavis the Reading Specialist hand-out lots of awards to the students.
The students of the month got South Dakota pins and signed Owney's book.
The students were sad that Owney had to leave Sperry. He is sporting a Sperry Pirate's pin and included some bookmarks for the students on his next visit.
During the short visit of Owney during our Spring Break, Owney visited a Tulsas Oilers hockey game. Although he was not familiar with the game of hockey, he was a quick learner. He thought he was going on a little trip to Branson, MO and then Eureka Springs, Ark. but instead he was off to South Dakota.

Due 3/6/02 in Winfield, arrive 4/5/02
Dear Owney Family: Owney made it to Kansas! All the Lowell students were excited to see him! It was fun telling new students about Owney and his adventures. Owney attended Social Studies classes and watched students sign a big Thank You sign for our teacher's aides and paraprofessionals. We put a Lowell Star t-shirt , a USD 465 ID badge, and 2 Kansas lapel pins on Owney. One pin was a Jayhawk. Go Hawks!
After everyone signed the book on Friday, we said good-bye and packed him up for another trip. He should be in Nebraska today.

They were so excited, and enjoyed going around with Owney & having their pictures taken.

37 North Dakota
Due 3/20/02 in Beulah, arrived 4/15/02
Postcards arrived from North Dakota with a picture of a bison. The card said Beulah's mascots are miners. There are 72 4th graders in Beulah. Tourist attractions there include Lake Sakajawea, International Peace Gardens, Garrison Dam, the geographical center of North America, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

38 Montana
Due 3/25/02 in Billings, arrived 4/18/02
Hi,
Owney arrived at Alkali Creek School in Billings, Montana about noon on April 18 to a very excited classroom of third graders. After getting unpacked, Owney went from desk to desk as the students read silently in Mrs. Kosmicki's class. Then he listened while Mrs. Kosmicki read to the class from Stranded, an exciting book by Montana author, Ben Micaelson.
At recess, Owney was very surprised to see all of the snow, but then so were we! It is definitely spring in Montana.
After recess, several students took Owney to meet the third graders in Mr. Dols' and Mrs. Engel's classrooms.
We finished the day with an "Owney Party." We ate Montana-made treats and celebrated by making Owney a Montana sheriff with his own badge.
All too soon, we had to pack him up and send him on his way to Wyoming.
Our postcards are on their way!

Due 4/3/02 in Chipita Park, arrived 5/1/02
Owney arrived at Ute Pass Elementary on May 1st, at 12:00. As our teacher brought him into the room, we all cheered! The class was very glad that he had come. We passed him around the room and looked at all his pins. You wouldn't believe all the pins that are on his little harness! We put a pin on that has our mascot and our school colors, green and gold. We wrote postcards, took pictures, and had a party! We'll mail him right away!
