2004 started off with a bang. Co-bred with Cinnamon Boxers and out of my lovely Delilah, Samson hit the very impressive Florida circuit the first week of January. First day out, Samson wins Reserve to a Major. The following evening he goes Specialty Best of Winners for 4 points. Four days later Samson wins back-to-back 4 point Majors. He finished it up a few days later with yet another 4 Point Major. Once the smoke cleared, Samson had gone from start to finish in 12 days and with 4 Major wins.
Booker T was still strutting his stuff at Specialties, even as he approached his 10th Birthday. Booker T won Best Veteran in Specialty at the Golden Gate Boxer Club in February 2004 under respected breeder judge Clay Haviland. He was handled wonderfully by Wendy Bettis. My pride in seeing a true veteran show so well and look half his age was just overwhelming. Booker T loves the ring!!
February 2004 saw Christina going to New York city to attend her first Westminster. This has long been a dream and I was fully able to get my plans together. I traveled with Eric Scott who had been to the show the prior year. It was amazing! Though the weather was 32 degrees and I thought my nose was going to freeze off my face, I was in heaven. I attended both days of showing and was able to snag much treasured front row seats each day. Eric and I watched so many breeds judged and was able to enjoy his own Whippet taking the Breed. I had box seats for Groups which gave us a great view. We happily had champagne and strawberries as we eagerly watched for Best in Show which was Josh the Newfie. We were even able to squeeze in going to the Empire State Building. Incredible view! I came back with tons of souvenirs and even more memories. I am already planning to go back to the Garden next year.
JJ's had his first sired Champion finish; bred by Star Boxers in Tx. A special boy, Lord, finished his American Championship with many wins being owner handled. I had the pleasure of watching him compete at the 2004 ABC National Specialty in Kentucky. This boy is truly a younger version of his handsome father.
Speaker had a very promising litter sired last year to Donray Boxers. From that breeding, two youngsters have already made their show presence known. Jamaica is being shown on a limited basis as she matures but has already won a Major Reserve from the puppy classes. Her brother Butch decided to take the fast track to his title. Becoming a Champion at just 13 months old, this handsome young man had already won both his Majors from the 6-9 month puppy class, and at 9 months old, he had 11 points with both Majors. I had the pleasure of watching them both at the ABC this year. Butch took a 3rd place in his huge Futurity class as well as making the final cut in his specialty class. Butch will be specialed in 2005.
A late comer came onto the AKC scene and showed she can do it well. MR Boxer Katrina Von T is a Booker T daughter that has been shown in 4H for the past 2 years. Her owner, Mark Ryan, aged out and now his mother wants to fulfil her dream of showing Katie in AKC. At this writing, Katie has been handled by the Bettis' for only 3 weekends. She has won her class all but twice and even has a Best of Winners for 2 points. She will show into the end of the year and see if a few more judges agree with the other ones so far. I easily see more show brags in her immediate future.
The resident Princess Penny decided to throw all my May 2004 breeding plans for her off kilter. She came into season 1-1/2 months early; she usually is late. As I scrambled to get all my breeding plans taken care of, Penny further messed up my plans by whelping the litter 3 days early! In the space of less than 3-4 hours, she went into labor and was getting ready for delivery. Unfortunately she forgot to tell me this as she ate her breakast like normal and her temperature dropped only a bit. I went to work thinking perhaps the next day I should stay home and do puppy watch. I came home at 4:30pm to her being in full blown labor. As I ran all around my house trying to grab my necessary supplies, she proceeded to deliver the first pup. Caos is the only way to describe the scene. Thankfully we had set up the whelping a box a week early to get her used to its presence. With the help of my good friend Susan Curry, the litter was free whelped without incident. I must add my husband was forced to help deliver the first puppy since I had only just called Susan (she lives 1 hour away). He was thrilled to see Susan walk in the door to relieve him
From that litter, two of the girls started off winning quite early. At 3 months old and handled by Christina, Holly went Group 3 out of 10 working dogs at the Sir Francis Drake KC AKC sanctioned puppy match. The following month, her sister Jay-Z won a Group 2 at the N.California Working Association AKC sanction match. Look for these two girls in 2005.
I had my first Sweepstakes judging assignment in October. The Boxer Club of Oklahoma invited me to judge and was I truly honored. Everyone made me feel very welcome. I stayed at the home of Ann Gilbert. She was a fabulous hostess. My Best Puppy in Sweeps was a handsome boy and a Jet Breaker grandson. My Grandsweeps winner was a striking dark brindle boy with a bite I would have loved to taken home with me. It was truly a wonderful experience to be on the other side of the dog lead.
