Tribute to Steve Young

Jeff Garcia

Jeff Garcia

Jeff Garcia

Most new quarterbacks would buckle under the pressure of replacing legends such as Joe Montana and Steve Young, but Jeff Garcia much to his credit has filled the big shoes of the two men that he grew up rooting for as a kid in the south bay town of Gilroy. Having been to Canada and NFL Europe during his professional football career, Jeff is now a pro bowl quarterback and is on the right track to leading a young fresh bunch of 49ers back to the Super Bowl where they belong.

Terrell Owens

Terrell Owens

Terrell Owens

Much like his quarterback, Terrell Owens came in filling the shoes of a departed legend in Jerry Rice and he himself has done a more then adequate job of replacing the legend. T.O. is the prototypical wide reciever of today's NFL, for he is a big target that is difficult for defensive backs to bring down and is the 49ers primary big play maker and offensive weapon. While T.O. may catch a lot of heat for his somewhat up front personality, he brings a swagger and style to the 49ers that they seem to have been missing before the 2001 season.

Tai Streets

JJ Stokes

While Terrell Owens is the most prolific target for the 49ers, Tai Streets and JJ Stokes are alternate deep threats that would have any offensive coordinator smiling. Along with T.O., Tai and JJ help complete a three headed monster and provid Jeff Garcia with many options as targets.

Garrison Hearst

Garrison Hearst

After substaining a serious ankle injury two seasons ago, Garrison Hearst was written off by many to never play football again. However, Garrison returned to the 49ers with the determination to not only be as good as he was before, but to be even better. He lived up to that billing by turning in yet another 1000 yard rushing season and getting another pro bowl selection. Garrison Hearst's presence in the locker room and on the field are two very big reasons the 49ers returned to the NFL playoffs.

the 49ers defense

Goal line stand against the Eagles

The 49ers knew that in order to return to past glory, they needed to be better on the defensive side of the ball. While as a whole the group is still young and learning, they do not lack for heart and hustle. In 2001 the 49ers posted consecutive shutouts at home for the first time since moving to Candlestick Park. While thier shutout streak came to an end against the Eagles, in that game was a memorable goal line stand that some will argue could be one of the best executed goal line stands in NFL history.

Ahmed Plummer

Zach Bronson

Ahmed Plummer and Zach Bronson are two young and improving defensive backs who much like the rest of the defense, do not lack for hustle. They like to play a physical brand of football and have an uncanny ability to always be near the ball no matter where it goes.

Andre Carter

Andre Carter was all ready well known by bay area fans from his collegiate career at Cal. After getting off to a slow start in his rookie season, Andre was in the middle of some key plays torwards the end of the 2001 season and is a big reason for the 49ers returning to the playoffs.

Bryant Young

Dana Stubblefield

Bryant Young was allready a fixture at defensive tackle for the 49ers, but in 2001 he was reunited with Dana Stubblefield and both greatly benefited the team. Stubby and B.Y. are the veteran leaders of the 49ers young defense and are a pair to be reckoned with for any offensive line they go up against.

Candlestick Park

The home of the 49ers for more than 25 years. Candlestick Park has seen so many important NFL games take place. Not to mention the cold biting winds and soggy field, that gave the 49ers a distinct home field advantage that was taken advantage of to the extent.
