Chicano/Latino Students Protest

September 16, 2002

Today Chicano/Latino students at Bakersfield College (1801 Panorama Dr. Bakersfield CA 93305) walked out of classes in a protest of Chicano/Latino Cultural curriculum cuts. Bakersfield College recently cut out many of the cultural classes of interest to Chicano and Latino students.

The protests were headed up by M.E.Ch.A (movimiento estudiantil chicano de Aztlan) in an attempt to bring back these cultural classes. There are faculty already in the college who could teach, as well as other qualified people available to be hired to teach these classes...seems that Bakersfield College, a college that is attended by many Chicano/Latino students, doesn't think that their Chicano/Latino students are important enough to provide the classes they once provided. These classes were cut as a result of budget cuts...however, the white man's history stays in the curriculum.

If you are thinking "I don't go there, so it doesn't matter to me...", think again. This is another form of cultural genocide and we must stop it wherever it may occur...what if YOUR college is next?
