As you all know, there has been many boy bands ruling the charts. For way too long now the boys have been telling us exactly what the want and having it their way. Of course that all changed when 5 girls from Britain took over the charts. They have really turned the tables on these guys.
But who could compete with 5 girls that are sassy, outspoken, sometimes rude, sweet, a bit of everything and anything, just really being themselves. And doing just that, they have proved to be the biggest thing to hit the music business and the public in years.
Their first single “Wannabe” is a song that is an amazingly catchy statement for Girl Power, which has rocked to the top of the charts in 37 countries, selling more then 3 million copies and still counting in the process. Following “Wannabe” is their other singles “Say You’ll Be There” and “2 become 1”, each with a softer but sexier sound that has already been sold by over 2 million people.. still not counting America. Their debut album “Spice” has gone platinum in over 17 countries. These girls are way beyond being hot.
The question that has seemed to be asked the most is.. “Who is your favorite Spice Girl?” And each answer for that question is always understood. There is no way that someone has not heard of the Spice Girls.. unless of course they are living like a hermit, away from newspapers, television, and radio... In todays’ society.. thats not very likely to happen. They have totally invaded the media. In Britain it was virtually impossible to open a daily paper or magazine without reading something about them. Would you believe that they were gonna call themselves ‘Touch’? Believe it or not, but it’s true. ‘Touch’ wasn’t catchy enough so they changed it to their name that you know them by and thats SPICE GIRLS.
But you probably wouldn’t have believed it that 6 years ago they were just normal everyday people.. you know the type.. then kind that the media really didn’t pay too much attention to. But who could really blame them. These girls lived very tough lives before becoming famous. They were just like any other person who wanted to be in the entertainment industry. They were answering ads, attending auditions, taking whatever job came their way to keep their body and soul together.
As you may know.. in Britain (and not trying to offend in any way), pop trends appear and vanish as often as the tides do. When your famous there.. yes.. sure it’s great.. but the real fame can come from America.. which is and still remains the big one and the hard ‘nut to crack’. If you have really been keeping up with the times.. you should know that here in the nineties.. the only British band to make a real impression in the States is Oasis. Which the critics has said are the biggest thing to come out of Britain since the Beatles.
All you know that that statement is wrong.
The biggest thing to come out of England since The Beatles is the Spice Girls. When you have a song like “Wannabe”, who can really try to resist you? America really hasn’t even bothered to try to resist. It would be useless anyways. A song sung by 5 girls with enough attitude to move mountain, all you can really do is roll over and accept fate.
The song has that chunky mix of pop, R&B, hip-hop, and dance that has shown to be irresistible for everybody. Almost all girls (just about all) could identify with you-want-me-get-with-my-friends-too message that is delivered by Mel C, Emma, Geri, Mel B( now G), and Victoria were putting across in the lyrics, and the boys could enjoy just watching them. And just maybe they could learn a thing or two about how to treat women these days. Only the really deep fan of alternative music and noise could have failed to have the cockles of his heart warmed.
They entered the charts at number 11 and then the next week they jumped up to #1. They are the first British female act ever to be number 1 and having their album very neatly poised in the top ten.
On the April 12 edition of Saturday Night Live, they staged their premier performance with a live band. The country didn’t know what hit them.
When you got down to it.. Did it really matter that someone else had brought this girls together? This is the 90’s, and these 5 women with an agenda, not brainless smiles in matching clothes with a TV series to promote, they aren’t like the Monkees.
By the time the public saw these wild girls for the first time, in June 1996, they were already raw, loud, blunt, bold, and in-yer-face. In other words, just completely being themselves. Definitely not mealy-mouthed little pop-star hopefuls, meek and mild, well mannered and eager to please the guys. Nor were they a bunch of bimbos, all bods and no brains. So if you are asking how could this be a new manufacturing process for pop-stars?
Well actually, it sure wasn’t. Yes, they were sexy, and totally up-front about it. I mean what could be wrong with that? It’s done everyday. Who doesn’t like to feel sexy? Sexy is good. But this bunch also came with that policy that has also made a impact- Girl Power! While you could go out with them, have a drink and a good laugh, you’d better not mess around, mister, or you’d suddenly find yourself wishing you were miles away- in another galaxy for instance. And the only way you could get a green light is if they gave you the signal. This was the new feminism, less serious, and maybe more powerful, than its hippie mother and academic big sister of the last few decades.
These girls weren’t gonna knock on the door politely and wait for it to be answered. They were gonna kick it down and walk in as if they owned the place. And that’s exactly what they did. In doing so, they just happened to speak for girls- and to boys- everywhere.
They weren’t about to sing a bunch of great songs created by someone else. These girls took control. They’ve had a hand in the writing of every song that they’ve sung. And that’s not manufactured, that’s creation. And that’s the power of Girl Power!
They take control of their lives. They are a mirror of Every Girl who’s out there slaving away in school or at a boring job, sick of being trodden on, waiting for the evening weekend to roll around so they could go out and have a good time. They dress in fashion and, in Mel C’s case, the sportswear, that people buy every day from the High Street stores, the clothes Every Girl sees when she goes shopping at lunch time thinking of how she’s going to spend her money.
As time went on the Girls signed to make a movie. Some what like the movie “Hard Day’s Night” that starred John, Paul, George, and Ringo. But not they had to move over- the 90’s are here and so are the Spice Girls. Their movie is called “Spice World”.
They went from the Big Screen to the Plastic Scene. Meaning during the making of their movie, these gals were immortalized as dolls.. sold in toy stores around the world. Having many different series to collect. From the Original set to the Spice World set to the On Stage set.. that had 2 different sets itself for their Spice World concert tour. There are also dolls that sing.. dolls that are no more than 5 inches tall.. and right on down to those beanie babies that everyone makes a big deal out of. This girls haven’t just hit it big in the music scene, but they also went big with all their many products that were produced of them.
The things that were made of them were lollipops that have a bubble gum center with one of the girls’ face on it or a saying of theirs’, pop rock lollipop candy that came with a foot sucker to eat the pop rock candy with, bubble gum, each of these each included a different set of stickers to collect. They also had chips, pizza, and many other food products from what I know.
Their other non-food products were of course those famous money making dolls, beanie babies, sing-along microphones, buttons, key chains, posters, stickers, pictures, photo albums, collectable photos, puzzles, books, T- Shirts, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, home movies, Playstation video game, watches, Polariod Spicecam, and many more things. The Spice Girls are a real money maker for any store, whether they sell only food, stationery, toys, candy, or posters. They were a guaranteed top selling item, no matter what the item was, it was selling like mad. No matter who you were.. you some how found yourself buying a product of theirs for yourself or someone you knew who really likes them.
After the ancouncement of their Spice World tour, they had been working on their 2nd album called Spice World to go with their movie. This album included their song that was to go with the Pepsi commercial that aired for the first time durning a Super Bowl game for football. These Girls really hit it big with a sponser like pepsi. Almost every big star had them to back them up. Like Micheal Jackson.
They kicked off their Spice World tour February 24th, in Dublin. The Girls toured America and Canada during June, July and August 1998, visiting 40 cities as a part of the Spiceworld world tour. And one of the cities that they visited was mine. I went to their Spice World concert. It was a great experience. I went Aug. 16, 1998. I remember that day like it was yesterday. Aww memories *L*. When the tickets for the Madison Square Gardens gig on July the 1st in New York went on sale, 14,500 tickets sold out in a record 12 minutes! During the American tour, the Girls also began writing and recording their third album.
It seemed as if all the Girls were happy. They had hit the big time and weren’t gonna let it all pass by them. But sadly, one girl wasn’t happy. And on Sunday, May 31st., 1998 she made it clear to the world she wasn’t happy. This girl was Geri Halliwell. She simply said that there was differences between her and the other girls that wasn’t gonna be cleared up. Just before she lefted the group she missed a few concert performances with her fellow girls. The Spice Girls reported that Geri was just sick and that she wasn’t going to leave the group. But Geri practically threw it in their face the following days with her lawyer reporting this departure.
People every where were upset. They went as far as not going to the Spice Girls concert just because Geri lefted. Males every where got upset. The tabloids blamed it all on Mel B(G). They said that she and Geri had to many fights about who would be the one in front of the other girls durning a dance routine, and who got the most solo parts. Everyone was mad at Mel B(G). But yet it was Mel B(G) who covered up for Geri when she didn’t show up to the concert performances. She is the one who went and told the public, for her friend, that she was sick and was unable to perform. In my opinion, Geri just wanted to get a taste of fame with a group then leave them so she could take the fame for herself. Many others think this as well.
But just because one member of the group lefted, many just didn’t cared to know what these girls still had to offer. The media went crazy on the stories abuot them. Anything to sell their paper, they wrote. Whether it was true or not. They said that they are all washed up, they don’t know how to keep themselves in the music, all kinds of things. And many really listened to these liars. But only a true fan would stay behind their group. Just because one of them lefted.. doesn’t mean that they have to stop liking the group. From the billions of fans they had, only a few million remain true to them. And those others called themselves FANS. Please! Real fans don’t leave their group just because of one difference in the whole group. Those fans that I am talking about really upset me. If they would just pay attention more to the big things and not the little things.. the Spice Girls would proably want to please everyone again.
Yes, the Spice Girls suport the album that Geri made on her own. And so do I. I purchased the cd and it’s pretty good. But I still like the Spice Girls. Even though it’s been a very long time since they have came out with their 3rd album. Yes, they are making a 3rd album. It was said that they were going to have it out December of 1998. But with Victoria and Mel B(G) pregant and all, it was very hard to make a song with all their busy schedules. Mel C and Emma have gone and done their own solo songs. In fact Mel C moved here to California to Los Angeles and made her own solo album, which is to hit stores this November 22nd, 1999. The album is called “Northern Star”. It includes her songs titled: Go!, Northern Star, Goin’ Down, I turn to you, If that were me, Never be the same again, Why, Suddenly Monday, Ga Ga, Be the one, Closer, Feel the Sun. All these songs are very great. I have heard a brief clip of them all and they sound great. If you would like to hear these songs visit their web page http://c3.vmg.co.uk/spicegirls/nowspice/ and visit Mel C site or just swing on to http://www.northern-star.co.uk/
Things have came and gone for these gals. But it doesn’t meant that they are gone now. They may not be famous right now, but you won’t know a person who hasn’t heard of these girls, whether they know them as the negative names like Spice sluts or Spice hoes or Scanky girls or any other negative name that the people have said.. I have practically heard them all. But I refuse to recongize them like that. They are the one and only........ SPICE GIRLS!
