THE WEEKLY RAID

"Bombers Clinch Division Title"

August 30, 1999

FREMONT, CA -- The Bay Area Bombers defeated Hoy's Boys last night to clinch a first place finish in their division. Entering the game percentage points behind Hoy's, the Bombers' victory gave the team a 7-2-1 record, which was identical to Hoy's record but the Bombers had the head-to-head advantage.

The Bombers' first place finish is the team's first since the Spring of 1996, when they went 9-1. "You've got to keep in mind that we had a forfeit," said first baseman Matt Pawlik. "Conceiveably, we could have been 8-1-1."

"I think we've established a pretty good rivalry with the 'Leppards,'" said pitcher Robert Swan. "I always forget their team's name, so I just call 'em the 'Leppards' since they're all deaf. I know it's tacky, but oh well!" It sounds like the rivalry is alive alright. In the two games between the Bombers and Hoy's, each game went to extra innings -- the first ended in a tie, the second decided by just three runs.

In the end, it was the Bomber bats led them to an 18-15 victory. "We certainly didn't win because of our defense or my pitching," said Swan, who uncharacteristically walked five batters. "It's the same thing it's been all year -- the bats."

Almost all of the Bomber bats were in full gear last night, but once again it was Scott Rose and Rich Scott that led the way. Rich's sixth-inning home run was an estimated 350 feet. Tony Boughton also continued his hot hitting for the team.

The Bombers next game will be the championship tournament on September 11.

Bomber Bits: With most of the Bomber bats sizzling, one bat is surprisingly cold. "I asked Rich to drop me in the lineup," confessed pitcher Robert Swan. "Everyone goes through funks, but mine has lasted all season. A few years ago this happened to me, so I dropped to the end of the line-up, corrected myself, and hit over .700 the next two seasons." Manager Rich Scott reluctantly agreed to Swan's request. "REAL pitchers hit last," joked Swan. "If anything, maybe hitting last will improve my strikeouts-to-walks ratio."
