Why? I came to the point where I wanted to reach out and touch the past. Greece is truly the cradle of western civilization. All of our present-day philosophies of society can be seen in Greece. They had some science, but only a rudimentary technology. Here are some recently-acquired bronze arrowheads. Each is a little over an inch long.
I'm just getting started with coin collecting. So far I've mostly read books. Some good ones still in print are: Greek Coins & Their Values, Vol. I Greek Coins & Their Values, Vol. II by David R. Sear
Ancient Coin Collecting Volume I Ancient Coin Collecting Volume II Classical Deception by Wayne G. Sayles
Some basic notes: Obverse is the front of a coin; reverse is the back. EL means electrum, a naturally-occurring gold-silver alloy AV means gold AR means silver AE means bronze Ancient means before the fall of the Roman empire, at least the western part of it - the eastern, Byzantine part hung on until the middle ages. Archaic is before 479 BC, when the Persian invaders were defeated. Classical* is before 336 BC, the accession of Alexander III. The Hellenistic age begins with the accession of Alexander III. Greek is good because it's more aesthetically pleasing than Roman (my opinion). *Not to be confused with classical civilizations, the Greeks and Romans.
