Chapter 6

Later that night, Brian sat on a small cot in a tent that he shared with Jeff and Sam. He opened the envelope and took out the contents. The first paper was his birth certificate. The next few were important looking documents concerning him. Amongst the documents was a letter.

Dearest Brian,
Hi Baby. I know that by the time you read this, you will probably be grown up, but no matter how old you get, you'll always be my baby. I know if you're reading this, then I died and Mark told you what to do. I'm sorry we never really got to meet, and that I never got to raise you. Mark doesn't know what I was involved in, but let me explain. Several decades ago, a small group came to power in the black market. Since then, they've grown into a large organization. They are called the Junta. (That means a small group of military officials that take over the government. ) At this time, they haven't taken over yet, but I know they're planning to do so. I hope they haven't succeeded as of yet. For the last decade or so, small groups have formed to fight them. However, it was only a few years ago that they pulled together as one force.

I was one of the head officials of the newly formed group. We call ourselves the Resistance. Shortly after you were born, I was elected to go on a mission to join the Junta and become a spy. I leave tomorrow to start my mission. I don't know what I'll learn, but I'm sure it will come of some use to us. I have already come in contact with a few members of the Junta, and from what I have learned, if they figure out my secret, then I will surely be killed. I'm sorry you couldn't have learned of your mother's past another way, but for security reasons, I couldn't tell Mark. He just knew that I was involved with something, and that I could be killed. It was safer for him and you if neither of you learned the truth.

However Brian, there is something I must add. If you reach your teens, I don't know if the Junta will find you before then or not, I promised the Resistance that you would fight for them. I know that you have the spirit because of the blood that flows through your parent's veins. I hope you don't mind. The people here believe in the child inheriting the parent's task. I never meant to put you in danger, however, from the minute I found out that I was pregnant, you were in danger. You are an important asset to the Junta. I can't tell you as of yet, however, it has to do with your father. I can't say too much right now, because this isn't secure. In time, he will make himself known. It is because of him and the assistance that you would bring him, that the Junta want you so much. I know that you never got to know me, but you must promise me that you will stay with the Resistance! It is vital for everyone's sake that you don't come into the hands of the Junta! I am unable to tell you the reasoning behind this, but in time, you will learn. No doubt your father will come after you and he will no doubt tell you his plans because you are important to him.

My light goes dim. That's all I can say for now Brian. If in an event that I do die, then, I will always be with you. Just remember that I love you. With Love,
Alexandra
"Mom"

p.s. I lost my last name some time ago.

Brian let the letter fall from his hand onto the pile of paper in front of him. Again, the feeling of betrayal came up. His vision blurred as his eyes filled with tears. His entire life he had been living a lie. Not only that, he hated the fact that his fate was sealed before birth. Several hot tears rolled down his cheeks and fell on the papers beside him.

Sam entered the tent to see Brian crying. Her cold, strong exterior melted and her face softened. She gracefully walked across the tent to Brian. She moved the papers and sat down next to him. "What's wrong Brian?" He looked away from her, and the tears fell harder. Sam placed her finger under his chin and guided his face toward her. "Brian?"

He looked into her questioning eyes. The cold, ruthless gaze she had in her eyes before was gone and was replaced with warmth and kindness. She pulled him into her embrace and Brian silently cried into her shoulder.

Sam looked down at the teen in her arms. To her, he seemed more like a scared little boy, not a young man who was the most important piece in a puzzle which would soon be complete. Several minutes later, she realized that he had cried himself to sleep. With her free hand, she pulled the blanket back. Carefully, Sam maneuvered herself so she could lay Brian down on the cot without waking him up. Luckily, he only stirred slightly. She proceeded to pulled the blanket over Brian. Sam looked at the papers on the floor and she put them back into the envelope. The envelope was then placed back in the backpack. She leaned down and kissed Brian's forehead. "Sleep well Brian. The next few days will be traitorous." She whispered. Jeff entered and proceeded to go to his cot. With that said, she climbed into her own cot and turned out the light. Within moments, she fell into a deep sleep, wondering what exactly was ahead of her these next few days.
