CULVERHOUSE

In Thoren's Family Tree

Generation One

JOHN CULVERHOUSE. The earliest mention that I have of anyone by this name is for an abstract of a will for a John CULVERHOUSE in Loudoun County, Virginia 29 Nov 1745. This leads me to the assumption that he may have been the first of this family in that area. It is possible that his wife was named Eleanor. So far, I have not found any proof of the relationship between John CULVERHOUSE and the following generations. There were also other CULVERHOUSE families living in North Carolina in the early records, but again, no proof has been found of any relationship, and I am looking to find one.

Generation Two

WILLIAM CULVERHOUSE. Almost nothing is known about him at this time. I think he could be either a son or a brother of the above mentioned John CULVERHOUSE but proof is still needed to support that theory. William's wife may have been named Cloe, as well as a daughter. It is believed that he had sons named James and William, and a daughter named Cloe. He had died before his daughter Cloe's marriage in Jan 1807.

Generation Three

CLOE CULVERHOUSE. It has been estimated that Cloe was born about 1786-1789. One census indicated her place of birth as South Carolina, but to date I have found no other reference to any Culverhouse in South Carolina. Her father was William CULVERHOUSE, and her mother may have also been named Cloe. Cloe CULVERHOUSE married on 20 Jan 1807 in Fauquier County, Virginia to George TOLLE Jr. The bondsman was James CULVERHOUSE, and it is presumed that he was her brother. He stated that she was the daughter of deceased William CULVERHOUSE and was over the age of twenty-one.

Cloe (Culverhouse) and George Tolle had nine children surnamed TOLLE:

1) Lucinda Tolle b 1 May 1808; m Turner Dawson
2) Susan Tolle
3) Parmenus W. Tolle b ca 1812; m Susan Jane Davis
4) Nimrod D. Tolle b ca 1814; m Sidney Mallory
5) Julia Ann Tolle b ca 1816; m Thompson Anderson
6) Ann Mariah Tolle b 27 Jun 1818; m Lewis S. Brown
7) George Daniel Tolle b Jun 1820; m Martha Stafford
8) Catherine Jane b 21 Sep 1822; m George Washington Sevier
9) Vienna Elizabeth Tolle; b bef 1830; m William S. Hall

About 1836 Cloe and George moved with their family to Marion County, Missouri where George died about Oct of 1839. Cloe was listed in the 1840 census of Marion County, Missouri but not found on the census for 1850. In 1860 she was living there with her youngest daughter. No record of her death has been found yet.
