Generation One

THOMAS DUKE1 was apparently the first of my Duke line in America. Records indicate that he was from County Kent, England, and was found in James City County, Virginia by 1651. His wife was believed to be Mary BARHAM, also of County Kent, England. Their known children were: 1) Henry b 1640-1645; and 2) John. After his death, his widow married Thomas Wade.

Generation Two

COL HENRY DUKE2was refered to early as Captain, and later in life as Colonel Henry Duke. He was the son of Thomas DUKE and Mary BARHAM. He was born probably between 1640-1645. He married Elizabeth MARSTON and they had the following children: 1) John; 2) Henry; 3) James; 4) Thomas; 5) Elizabeth; and possbly 6) Edmond; and 7) Marston. Col Henry DUKE had large land holdings in James City County, Virginia, and in 1694 he was a member of the House of Brugess. He died early in 1714.

Generation Three

JAMES DUKE3son of Col Henry DUKE and Elizabeth MARSTON. He was born in James City County, Virginia. He was a Justice of the Peace in James City County, and when that part of the county became Charles City County he was Justice of the Peace there also. He married about 1700 to Mary BYRD and they had several children: 1) William; 2) Edmond; 3) Henry; 4) Anne; 5) Mary; and 6) Sarah. James DUKE died in 1751 in Charles City County, Virginia and his widow married again to Richard Corbett.

Generation Four

WILLIAM DUKE Sr4 son of James DUKE and Mary BYRD was born about 1700/01 in Charles City County, Virginia. When he was about nine years old he was sent to be raised and educated by his Uncle Colonel William Byrd. By 1727 he was living in Brunswick County, Virginia. His first wife is believed to have been named Thamar and she died about 1737. They had several children. 1) Thamar; 2) William; 3) Samuel; 4) John; and 5) Joseph. He married second the widow Elizabeth Bartholomew. In 1744 he sold his land in Brunswick County, and moved to North Carolina with his sons and other family members. He died in early 1775.

Generation Five

JOSEPH DUKE5 was probably born sometime in the 1720s. He was the son of William DUKE Sr and his mother's name is believed to have been Thamar (maiden name unknown). The wife of Joseph is unknown, but they had a large family: 1) Major; 2) Mary; 3) Alice; 4) Delilah; 5) William; 6) Buckner; 7) Martha; 8) Isham; 9) Sherrod; 10) Hardy: 11) Ransom; and 12) Repps. In 1745 he and other family members moved to what was then Granville County, North Carolina. This area later became Bute County, and even later Warren County, North Carolina. He wrote his will In Jan 1778, and it was proved in the Warren County court Aug 1779.

Generation Six

MAJOR DUKE6 was the son of Joseph DUKE. He was probalby born in the 1740s in Bute County, which later became Warren County, North Carolina. Sometime about 1780 he sold his property there and went to Union County, Old 96 District, South Carolina and appeared there on the 1790 census. He married before 1771, but the name of his wife is not known. They had a large family, but not all of the children have been proven or named so far. Here are some who are believed to be the children of Major DUKE: 1) William b 4 Jul 1776; 2) John; 3) & 4) two unnamed daughters who married men named Boatman; 5) a daughter woh married a Murphy; 6) James; and 7) Hardiman. Other possible children were 8) Thomas and 9) Michael.

Generation Seven

WILLIAM B. DUKE7 was probably born 4 Jul 1766 in South Carolina. His wife was Jane McLAUGHLIN. The children of William and Jane were: 1) James born 1788; 2) John b 1790; 3) Charles b 1792; 4) William M. b 1796; and 5) Wiley b 22 Mar 1798. They were living in Franklin County, Alabama in 1820, Marion County, Alabama in 1830, and by 1840 they were in Itawamba County, Mississippi. Jane died before 1830 and William died 1847 in Mississippi and is buried in Old Duke Flats, Fulton, Itawamba County, Mississippi.

Generation Eight

JOHN DUKE8 son of William DUKE and Jane McLAUGHLIN was born about 1790 in Laurens County, South Carolina. He married about 1809 in Franklin County, Tennessee to Mary Jane METCALF. John and Mary Jane had five known children: 1) Elizabeth b 17 Sep 1810; 2) William Kuykendall b 28 Dec 1812; 3) Eleanor b 16 Aug 1816; 4) Ann b ca 1819; and 5) John b 2 Jan 1822. John died before 1844 in Yalobusha County, Mississippi and Mary Jane died 24 Dec 1866 and is buried in Pine Valley, Yalobusha County, Mississippi. A tombstone for John has not been found, but it is believed that he is buried there too.

Generation Nine

ELEANOR DUKE9 the daughter of John DUKE and Mary Jane METCALF, was born 16 Aug 1816. Exactly where is not known at this time. She married Presley Wren THORNTON on 19 Dec 1833, possibly in Fayette County, Alabama. They must have moved to Yalabusha County, Mississippi soon after the marriage. Presley and Eleanor had ten children: 1) John Marshall b 7 May 1835; 2) William Henry b Feb 1837; 3) Wiley D. b ca 1839; 4) Presley Wren Jr b 8 Aug 1841; 5) David b ca 1843; 6) Robert b ca 1846; 7) Mary Elizabeth b ca 1849; 8) James Presley b 16 Aug 1852; 9) Abraham M. b Sep 1855; and 10) Grace b ca 1859. Presley died 14 Jul 1883 and Eleanor died 20 Mar 1885. They are both buried in the Turkey Creek Cemetery in Pine Valley, Mississippi.
