Generation
One JAMES POTTER1 is the earliest
identified
ancestor in this POTTER family. Most of the
data I have on
him comes from his very descriptive
Revolutionary War
Pension record. He was born 6 Jul 1759 in
Connecticut. I
don't know who his parents were, but I think
James must
have
come to East Tennessee with them, as he was
only twenty
years old when he joined the army in the
Revolutionary War.
He inlisted in the State of North Carolina,
in the part
that
later became Cocke and Greene Counties,
Tennessee. There
are
other POTTER's in the marriage records in
that area who may
be his siblings. His Pension records reveal a
lot about his
time he served in the Revolutionay War. We
don't know who
his wife was. He must have married in the
early to mid
1780s. The early census records indicate a
large family.
The
following people are believed to be his
children 1)
Eldredge; 2) Joshua; 3) Wilson; 4) Thomas; 5)
Nathaniel; 6)
a female; 7) Bently; 8) Samuel; and possibly
9) Nelson; and 10) Solomon. In Greene County,
Tennessee, he
applied for pension for his service in the
Revolutionary
War. He received $40.00 per year. By 1840 he
had moved to
Missouri to be with his children. His date of
death is not
known, but he recceived his last penison
payment on 29 Nov
1842 in Platte County, Missouri. Nothing more
is known
about
his wife. Generation
Two ELDREGDE POTTER2 was born in
Tennessee about
26 Oct 1791. He was the son of James POTTER.
His mother is
unknown. Eldredge POTTER married Mary Ann
"Polly" HIXSON on
27 Oct 1813 in Greene County, Tennessee.
James and Mary Ann
had thirteen children: 1) William b ca 1815
TN; 2) Nancy
born 6 Apr 1816 TN; 3) Susan/Susannah b ca
1820 TN or MO;
4)
Bathsheba b ca 1821 MO; 5) Andrew Jackson b
ca 1824 MO; 6)
Betsy Ann b ca 1824 MO; 7) James Baxter b 12
Aug 1825 MO;
8)
Elvina/Melvina b ca 1826; 9) William Henry b
5 Sep 1826;
10)
Mary Ann b ca 1827 MO; 11) Thomas Potter b ca
1828 MO; 12)
George W.T. b 30 Dec 1831 MO; and
13) Margaret Serelda b 16 May 1837 MO. One
record says he
was a soldier in the Florida Seminole War.
When Eldredge
first came to Missouri it was to Ray County,
and he was on
the 1821 tax list for that County. That part
later became
Clay County. By 1837 he was living in Clinton
County.
Eldredge died in Clinton County on 26 Feb
1870, at the age
of 78 years, 4 months and 2 days, and Mary
Ann died 4 Aug
1879. They are both buried at the Round
Prairie Cemetery in
Clinton County, Missouri. Generation Three NANCY
POTTER3 was born 6 Ap 1816 in
either Cocke or
Green County, Tennessee. Her parents were
Eldredge POTTER
and Mary Ann HIXSON. She was a small child
when her family
moved to Ray County, Missouri before 1821.
That portion of
Ray County later became Clay County. It was
in Clay County
where she married on 10 Sep 1835 to William
SHAW. Nancy and William had four
children surnamed
SHAW: 1) Simarah born 16 Oct 1836; 2) John
Redman b 30 Nov
1840;
3) Mary Elizabeth born 6 Apr 1843; and 4)
Miranda Ellen born
10
Nov 1845. It is possible that Nancy died in
childbirth in
1845. William had remarried by the time of
the 1850 census.
William married three more times over the
years, and more
children. He died in Lompoc, California. <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>>
