Davis Cabin | |
Info. | A wonderful place to
camp for a first time camp. The cabin is in Slide Hill Park in Davis, CA. It
has a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, stove, and oven plus there are charcoal
stoves just outside. It also has 2 (plumbed ) bathrooms, tables, chairs, dishes so
you only need to bring your art supplies and food. It sleeps about 20.
The location is next to a swimming pool complex, 8 acre park, tennis courts, play lots,
and is connected to the extensive bike trails in Davis. If you or anyone in your
troop has allergies, don't let the cabin cat in. The grey tabby has more dander than
3 housecats combined. Slide Hill Park is named for the giant concrete slide in the
park. Children can slide down on cardboard sleds. If you are with a troop, be
sure to have enough adults for safety if you plan to use the concrete slide. Davis offers double decker buses on campus which can add an element of fun to your camping if you will be visiting one of University buildings as part of your outing. Camp Fleming Campgrounds | |
Info. | When was the last time
you saw the night sky ablaze with the milky way? We don't mean a star here or there,
or the Big Dipper. We mean millions of stars twinkling in the night bright enough to
lighten the path to the latrine. Camp Fleming Campgrounds has that night view. Our visit was in the fall so the mosquitoes were not bad nor was the heat. We are told that in the summer, the camp can be hot (but there is a stream to explore). Coyotes can keep you awake with their howling but were far enough out. Bears do not typically come down this far but California mountain lions do so use the Scout safety practices. Located near Somerset, CA at just over 2,000 elevation, it is usually accessible year round. Click here for the official TdO fact sheet for this camp. |

|
Info. | The lodge upper dorm has
98 bunks. This is camping in comfort. The main level has a large great room
for dining and activities. There is a commercial kitchen, and a smaller (still
large) room for indoor crafts. The fireplace invites lounging. The camp fire ring has a stage and overlooks a beautiful backdrop. The trails from the lodge lead down to the Camp Fleming campgrounds. This area has cougars but few bears. The Lodge site lends itself to teaching outdoor skills, silk screening, and leather work. Be sure to plan Leader time so adult helpers can enjoy the lodge too. Lodge camping is an experience that your troop should not miss. |

Camp Menzies Click here for the official TdO fact sheet for this camp. |
|
Info. | This camp has platform
tents which can sleep a troop of 12 easily. The grounds also has cabin and tent
sites. Tierro del Oro offers a resident camp here each summer. There is a
large dining hall, the "patch and go" first aid building, and a camp run
kitchen. There are a few weekend packages for troops that include archery, canoe
skills, orienteering, water sports, nature exploration and a host of other topics.
The Camp fire site has a great view of the Sacramento Valley. Each area of the camp
has a bathroom complex. The showers are located in the "Sleepy Hollow"
site. The art building includes kick wheels for pottery and an eagle nest construction that offers a great view for the whole troop on each level. The top level seemed a bit shaky so our girls did not go up to the fourth level. On site Camp counselors make the experience fun for all. As is usual in scouts, nicknames are appropriate to personality and skill. Kapers are assigned to troops and are easily accomplished with team work. The camp sells Tee shirts for $5 off season. Usually only adult sizes are left but they can make a good sleeping tee. The Camp Counselors are happy to sign the shirts for an extra memento of your camping trip. Located high in the Sierra, the summit pass entrance is not open in inclement weather. This is bear country so be sure to double check that the girls do not have treats in their bags. The Pacific Crest Trail is 25 miles from the camp. Your troop could plan an outing to include this impressive and beautiful trail. Big Trees Park is also nearby and was on the way home for us. This park is full of big redwoods. There is a short hike in the park down to the Stanislaus River. It's a great place for lunch but the bathrooms are the "outhouse" variety. |
