CA Kids, Brownie Troop 1540
Davis, California

Free or nearly free things to do in Davis

Where do you take a troop of kids when funds are low?  In Davis (and the greater Sacramento area), the answer is many, many places.  Our troop loves field trips.  We started taking them out of necessity (sometimes our regular meeting place must be used for other business).  When this happens, we do not despair, we take a field trip.

Explorit Science Center
The fourth Saturday of each month is "Free Admission" for everyone!   This fun center is perfect for Brownie aged minds.  The regular admission price isn't that steep.

The Fire Ring in Mace Ranch Park
A Camp fire is fun even if it is not dark.   Davis Parks and Rec. is the official for this fun place but the last time we checked it was first come first serve, with any followers allowed to share.  The ring can sit 100 kids--easily.  Make sure you bring your water buckets and a shovel.  The only hard and fast rule we have found is that only natural wood may be burned.

Located next to the Richmond American subdivision in Mace, and somewhat behind the Explorit Science Center, this park has very little parking available.  The bathrooms are down the path toward the oak tree and continue under Alhambra to the other section of the park (about 2--3 blocks) so troops should consider this beforehand.   There are picnic tables, water, and play lots immediately adjacent to the campfire.  The greenbelt also offers several "bridges" for ceremonies

The Girl Scout Cabin in Slide Hill Park
Contact Tierra del Oro Girl Scout Council to reserve the cabin for your troop camping event.  The cabin has a kitchenette, bathrooms, and sleeps (floor) about 20.  Located in Slide Hill Park, there are plenty of recreational activities possible.

Manor Pool in Slide Hill Park
A great inexpensive place to have a pool party and best of all, the lifeguards are always there.  If you are not close to Manor Pool, then Community, or Civic Center pool must be close by.  There really isn't anyplace in Davis that is too far from a public pool (it gets very hot here).  Manor Pool has shade as well as a variety of pools for children.  MANOR POOL:  1525 Tulip Lane
(in Slide Hill Park) (530) 758-2000

Slide Hill in Slide Hill Park
The big concrete hill can be mean to elbows or knees.  Safety guidelines are must but this free giant slide is fun, fun, fun.  We also recommend that you get specific permission from the parents of all children and have a designated slide top and bottom adult to ensure safety.

Tennis in Slide Hill, Community Parks
The courts are first come, first serve.

Tour The Davis Children's Library
Be sure to make an appointment with the children's librarian.  She will make the trip fun and educational for your troop.  Ask about the international wall clock.   There are several libraries in Davis such as the University of California, Davis Libraries.  The children's library is located at:  315 E. 14th St. Davis, CA 95616
(530) 757-5593 - Fax: (530) 757-5590

Tour the Davis Fire Department
The kids do not get to slide down the pole (insurance you know) but this tour is none-the-less fun.  Our girls tried on the equipment and were able to see all the parts of the fire trucks up close.  With a female Fire Chief, this is a great site for Girl Scouts.  We visited Station 31 and Fire Department Headquarters located at 530 Fifth Street, Davis CA 95616.  You can contact the Fire Station to arrange a tour for your troop by calling (530) 757-5684.   Business Office Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Tour The Avid Reader for Young Readers
Contact Mrs. Alzada Forbes for an appointment.  Our Troop toured both the main store and the children's store.  We learned about retail and all the jobs that you can find in a bookstore.  The owner, Mrs. Forbes, generously conducted the tour herself.  This field trip helped us earn the Careers Try-It.  The Avid Reader for Young Readers is a kid friendly place.  Best of all, Baskin Robbins is next door.   The Avid Reader for Young Reader's store is located at 232 E Street, (916) 758-7700.

Tour A Grocery Store
Albertson's has always offered Scout Troops 10% off purchases if you arrange a sponsorship.  The management at our local store is wonderful and supportive of scouts.   Take the kids on a tour to get the menu items for trips.     Located at 1610  E. 8th St.

Farmers Market in Central Park
Whether you meet for a Wednesday evening or bright and early on a Saturday, scouts can learn alot at the market and still have "kid room" too.  Music, rides, playlots, animals, fresh fruit and vegetables, all in Central Park.  The Davis Farmers Market is located in Central Park, 4th & C Sts.  Saturday Market hours: 8-Noon year round.  Wednesday Market hours: April - Sept 4:30 PM - 8:30 PM.  Oct - March 2:PM - 6: PM.  For further information please call 530-756-1695. .

Rainbow City in Community Park
Nothing beats a good climbing experience at Rainbow City.  This structure is large so be sure to have an extra parent to keep an eye on the kids.  This play lot is a castle, a ship, whatever you can imagine.   The lower section can become caves or a secret clubhouse.  Guaranteed fun and a good workout.

Skate Park in Community Park
For skate board enthusiasts.
