Monroe Takes 1st and 2nd Place in VOD!

"Did we win?" C/MAJ Nassira Nicola asked 1SG Murphy, Monroe's SAI, when she learned he had the latest competition results.

Yes, Monroe High School's Viking Battalion did indeed win the JROTC level of the Voice of Democracy spoken-essay competition! C/COL Diana Biason and C/MAJ Nicola earned first and second place, respectively, for their essays on the theme "My Service to America."

This is the 5th victory in a row for Viking essayists, and the third for C/COL Biason. It is also the third time in a row that Monroe has taken both first and second place- ever since each battalion was allowed to enter two cadets in the competition. Says 1SG Murphy, "I'm proud of them, of course, but I never expected anything else."

C/COL Biason's recorded speech now progresses to the city-level VOD competition, where she will represent all Los Angeles JROTC cadets. The Colonel herself will be put to the test as commander of Monroe's drill-competition company during the December 5th All-City Drill Competition as well.

Additional congratulations go out to C/LTC Jennifer Kitil of Fairfax High School, whose essay took third place.
