"I bet you wouldn't." taunted Jenny.
"I would." argued Kevin, heatedly.
"You won't."
"I will."
"Fine Mr. Big Pants, then do it."
"Now?!!" "Yeah, you're not chicken are you?" she shoved her face in his.
"No-o-o, I'm not chicken."
"Then do IT. Just go up to him and ask to be in the talent show."
"No, we'll flip a coin. If it lands on heads, I'll do it, and if I don't, I'm a chicken. But if I get tails, I don't have to do it, and I'm still not a chicken." He took out a penny and showed it to her.
"Fine. We'll do that." she then reached over and grabbed the coin from him, ignoring his cry of protest. "Now." With that, she flipped it high into the air and watched the light reflect off of it.

"I dare you to sing to the outside." said B.J, pointing to the grass outside, "and you'll stand on the stump."
"Nuh uh. I don't wanna. Mommy'll catch me."
"She didn't catch you the last time you did it, so do IT."
"No."
"I dare you."
Nick smiled smugly, "I don't take dares from little sisters."
B.J. let out an indignant yelp. "WHAT?!"
"Heh hehŠ" he stopped laughing when she smacked him hard on the arm.
"OW!" he rubbed his arm, "That hurtŠ"he whined.
"If you're not going to take a dare, then we'll flip a coin." she dragged him across the kitchen and sorted through the various dollar bills on the counter till she found a dime. "Here we go. Heads you sing. Tails you don't."
"Fine." he muttered, sulking.
He and B.J both looked up as the she threw it in the air and the light sparkled on it.

"I don't think he should join." said one of the members of the choir.
"But he has an amazing voice." disagreed another.
"He's too young, even for the junior choir. He wouldn't be able to handle it, no matter how talented."
"Give Brian a chance, he has such a strong respect of God, and he would never misbehave in a house of God."
"How are we going to settle it then? We can't just sit here and argue the whole night."
"Let him join."
"No."
A third member interrupted, "Okay, umŠ why don't we flip a coin?" He reached into to his pocket, "UmŠI'm kind of short, either of you twoŠ?"
One of them heaved a huge sigh, and took out her purse. "Here, heads he's in, tails and he's out. Agreed?" she looked around to see if that was agreeable to everyone.
"Fine."
The coin shone on the light as she tossed it up.

"Come on Howie." coaxed Polly Anna, "You love to perform. Come with me to my tryouts. Please-e-e-e with a cherry on top."
"I don't want to go though, none of my friends'll be there."
"You were fine with this yesterday." she looked imploringly at him, "Come on, it'll be fun."
"Well, I changed my mind." He crossed his arms over his chest. "You can do it yourself."
"Yes... but I don't want to go all alone. I'll be lonely. PleaseŠ" she looked at him again.
"No."
"But you promised." she wailed.
He just shrugged and turned away.
"Wait, you've been on a winning streak lately, haven't you?" She suddenly though of an idea.
"YeahŠ" he started cautiously.
"Well, let's see if it'll hold. I'll toss a coin and if it's heads, you go also, tails, I'll go by myself."
Howie was torn by the wish to see if his luck really would hold, and he finally turned around and consented.
"Okay!" Polly Anna was careful not to show Howie both sides of the coin, and was glad she had borrowed it from John's magic kit.
Even though Polly Anna didn't toss the coin very high, millions of rays of light seemed to find their way onto the coin and bounced and flickered on it.

"I really don't know if I should go to another one." said A.J, leaning back in his chair, "Sure, Howie'll be there, and I guess I sorta want to see that Dick kid again. Or Slick, no that couldn't be it. He's not slick enough to be Slick, get it?" AJ leaned forward and laughed hard.
"Yeah." said his mother dryly. "Didn't you say his name was Nick, and isn't he quite a bit younger than you?"
AJ shrugged. " He's always at the talent tryouts. I don't know him that well, we sang and harmonized some stuff before. Out of boredom of course."
"Of course. You1d never talk to him otherwise." He shot her a look, but she looked at him innocently.
"Nervous and shy little kid though, always worried about doing something wrong and breaking a rule."
"HmmŠ You could learn a thing or two from him."
"Ha. Ha. And did I mention ha."
"Are you sure you don't want to go? And since the auditions are so closeŠ"
"I know, I know. I'm just getting tired of this. Go. Audition. Turned down, or get a lousy part. It's all the same."
"Still, I really think you should go. This might be something."
"I dunnoŠ"
"How about," she leaned over and picked up her purse, "we flip a coin?"
"Why not. Better than deciding myself. Heads I go, tails I don't."
The sunlight seemed to burst through the clouds as the coin flew into the air and the light shone on the coin.
