Here are some pictures taken from CSU Stanislaus Commencement 2001 with fellow members of Hmong Students Association (HSA) and friends. Out of the 1400 plus graduates, 55 were of Hmong descent. Congratulation to the 10 HSA members.
This is the first time that I'm aware of any Hmong students organization honoring their graduates. The Hmong Students Association of CSU Stanislaus is one of the first Hmong student organizations established in 1986 and we wanted to begin a new tradition. Since most fraternities or sororities honor their own graduates with unquie stoles we decided why can't we do the same. The HSA scrolls with the circular flowercloth (paj ntaub) really drew alot of attention from people. Some people asked which honor society did the HSA stoles with the flowercloth stand for? It represents the honor of being HMONG! This is a very powerful message. Education is the key to unlock the door that will open other doors. I wish for all Hmong student organizations across the country to follow this tradition of honoring their graduates.
Throughout our history we have been an oppressed minority. What little Hmong history we have it is only from outsiders’ writings and recordings. There is no Hmong history from the Hmong perspective. However, this is the first time in our 4,000 year culture we have the opportunity for education. Now we have access to the secrets of literacy and technology. We now have the power to continue the oppression or liberate our people. The choice is up to you.
