Origin:

R. J. Brande had not become the richest man in the Galaxy by being stupid. Even so, he was not a Naltorian and could not have known that it wasn't an opportunity for investment that had led his trusted aide Marla to summon him to the asteroid belt that was all that remained of the planet Krypton. It was not wealth, but rather a living being that Marla had found in the Birthing Matrix of Kal-El, the Last Son of Krypton.

Single and childless, R.J. felt a great bond with the decanted Kal-El, but was initially reluctant to formally adopt Kal as he felt the boy might be better served by a two parent family. In the end, though, Marla convinced R. J. that he had the makings of a good father. R. J. put aside his doubts and began the process of adoption before they reached Earth.

Handsome and good natured-- not to mention heir to the largest fortune in the Galaxy-- Kal-El would have attracted attention even if he had not found himself gradually becoming one of the mightiest beings in history. As his powers grew, so did Kal's ego and self-confidence. In spite of that, though, he was always careful to never use his powers to harm others. In an effort to encourage his self-control, R. J. made sure that Kal was aware that there once had been other beings of great power on Earth-- heroes such as the Justice League of America.

This had an even greater effect on young Kal than R. J. intended. Eager to prove his worth above and beyond his status as the son of R. J. Brande, Kal saw the example of the JLA as being a means to accomplish this end. Kal decided that he would become a superhero-- and form a team of heroes that would become even more famous than the Justice League.

After helping Rokk Krinn and Imra Ardeen save a space liner from attack by a space-faring creature, Kal offered them the opportunity to become the charter members of his new team.

Powers:

Kal-El Brande possesses incredible speed, strength, and resistance to physical harm. He can travel through space without oxygen for about an hour and safely traverse the natural and artificial space warps that make space travel possible. He possesses hyper-acute physical senses, can even see through any substance but lead and emit beams of radiant heat from his eyes.

In an era when Kryptonite has lost its radioactivity, only lack of yellow solar energy and magic can harm him. In spite of the fact that his biological father (who remains unknown to him) was a brilliant scientist and that his adopted father made sure to give him the best education that money can buy, Kal has a tendency to act first and think later. He's supremely confident-- perhaps even overconfident-- in his abilities. Kal-El isn't stupid; he just feels that he can handle everything.

He has yet to learn that even a Superboy can fail ...
