This page is dedicated to my father who served during the Vietnam War for the Royal Lao Army. He fought against the communist party that was trying to overthrow our long rich history of the monarchy. My father grew up in a small village outside of Sam Nuea, Laos. It nears the border of North Vietnam. Serving under General Vang Pao, Captain Somboun Sombath fought three enemies. Not only did the Royal Lao Army fought against the Viet Congs but also enemies within the country of Laos. Captain Kong Le, which later rose to the rank of General and his army fought for the control of Laos also trying to over through our King. The communist party was also on the front attacking the Monarch's army. The Royal Lao Army consisted of many ethnic groups. There were the ethnic Lao, Hmong, Mien, and the Khmu. My father's ethnicity is Khmu (not to be confused with Khmer or Cambodian; different language and racial group). Of course, once the U.S. Army pulled out of the war, our country fell into communist hands. The once capitalistic economy is now under the control of the national government. Apparently the United States lost the war against communist in South East Asia. Someone has to win and someone has to lose. The North Vietnamese united their country as a communist nation along with other surrounding countries. This was just a terrible war with a weak outcome.
