"Already a superstar in Latin America, Shakira gained ground in the U.S. last February after winning a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. Despite album sales of more than 10 million, just a few months earlier Shakira (last name: Mebarak) was virtually unknown in the U.S. 'I haven't even put my foot in the Anglo market, so this is a very good sign,' the Colombian native said after being chosen one of TEEN PEOPLE'S 25 Hottest Stars Under 25. Another indicator of great things to come: her kinetic performance of her Latin hit 'Ojos Asi' on the first Latin Grammy Awards telecast last September. With her husky, commanding vocals, the Miami based singer was a show-stopper: Imagine Jennifer Lopez's smoldering sexuality crossed with Alanis Morisette's rock bravura. Expect those standout ways to continue with the August release of her as-yet-untitled debut English-language album. 'Six months ago I felt pressured, but right now I feel so sure about what I have,' says Shakira, who recently enlisted power manager Freddy DeMann (whose clients have included Madonna and Michael Jackson) to guide her career.
