Demeter

demeter
Demeter's best friend is Bombalurina. ( I believe that they two are sisters.)
She learns a lot from her older and more experienced friend (or sister).
I've heard that she used to have a relationship with Macavity.
I don't know how it was exactly, becouse whoever you ask, you never will hear the same story!
I think that they may had a relationship, but Demeter decided to leave him.
Macavity can't accept this what makes him angry.

Demeter has the esteemed position of First One On Stage (she's the one that runs in the headlight)
and sings the second line in musical: "Can you see in the dark?"
During the Jellicle ball she sings "Until the Jellicle Moon appears."
Whenever there's a crash in the backround (ex. before Jerrie'n'Teaze's song)
She shrieks "Macavity!".
She also sings in "Macavity" and in "Grizabella". She's the one who first realizes that the Deuteronomy returned by
Macavity's henchmen is nothing but the Napoleon of crime himself,
and summarilly attacks the imposter.

If you look closely, you can see that Demeter is pretty nervous all the time!
This is a relict of the time when she and Macavity were together.
Maybe she is nervous becouse she fears to be cat-napped by Macavity,
or just becouse in their days she had to take care not to get involved in Macavity's crimes!

Demeter has a relationship with Munkustrap.
She and Munkus definitely spend plenty of time together,
and when he's injured in the fight with Macavity,
she's right there to lick his wounds.

The actress playing Demeter may understudy Grizabella.
She is played by:

  • Sharon Lee-Hill:Original London Cast, 1981.
  • Wendy Edmead: Original Broadway Cast, 1982.
  • Robyn Forsythe: Original Sydney cast, 1985.
  • Jo Bingham: London Cast, 1989. Many know Bingham from her
role in the Cats Video: She played Etcetera.
On the West End, she was Demeter, and gave a unique interpretation of the character.
  • Brenda Braxton: Broadway Cast, 1990's.
  • Aeva May: Video, 1997-98.
