Munkustrap
Munkustrap is the other Jellicle leader.
He leads the pack when Old-D is not there.
Even when the officiall leader is there!

Munkustrap is almost all the time on the center of action.
He is rarely not involved with whatever's going on.
MUNKUSTRAP Watch him interact with his friends; definately a people-person,or cats-cat, in this case.
He's the second cat to appear in the beginning, and the first to sing a line.
Are you blind when you're born?

During the Macavity-fight he becomes one of the protectors.
He and Alonzo are the two cats who
involve themselves in the Macavity fight,
but althoug they can't bat him, they can
at least "throw him out" of the junkyard...
well, in fact Macavity just disappears with a big flash,
but he wouldn't have done that if Munkustrap and Alonzo didn't fight with him.
But I can tell you one thing, they had to fight with Macavity,
becouse if they hadn't fight with him, Demeter could be cat-napped!

Munkustrap sings "The owful battle of Pekes and Pollicles"
for amusement of the other cats, the slow part of "Jennyanydot's song"
and the explanation about the Jellicle Ball:

Now Old Deutoronomy just before dawn,
Through a silence you feel you could cut with a knife,
Announces the cat who can now be reborn,
And come back to a different Jellicle life...

The actor who plays Munkustrap is chosen for his voice, just as Misto is chosen as a dancer.
Munku is one of my favourite cats.(Don't they all are?)

When Munkustrap grows older, and Old-D passes on, it's probably Munkustrap who will assume his position as leader.
He's also rumored to have relationship with Demeter, but many people will tell you different stories about this, too.
He is quite a manly cat, and takes charge incredibly well.
His precence is felt in the whole show. He is, as they say, the dominalent cat.

He's played by:
  • Jeff Shankley: Original London Cast, 1981.
  • Harry Groener: Original Broadway cast, 1982.
  • Paul Clausen: U. S. National Tour IV Cast.
  • Jean-Luc Rebaldi: West End Cast.
  • Michael Gruber: Video, 1997-98.
