Album Review:
Born in the U.S.A. answered all of those who asked the question "What has Springsteen actually done?" He had written a #1 hit for Manfred Mann at the start of his career (Blinded By The Light) but he had only 1 top-10 hit to his own credit. This album would not only earn him 7 additionaly top-10 songs, but would become Columbia's all-time greatest seller at more than 13,000,000 records sold. It would bring Springsteen, who was already recieving consistently sold out tours and gold records, to superstardom. It is an album that should be owned by every American, and one that almost all Americans can agree with.
The title track is about Vietnam, and a vets life and painful return from Vietnam. The tune is so muscled-up that it adds irony to its message, and that is one of the reasons it not only became one of the most popular and recognized songs of all-time, but one of the most famous patriotic songs even though it was written as a song of protest! The songs "Cover Me" and "Bobby Jean" are two beautiful songs thats messages and music should have their own albums. "No Surrender" the song about friendship and "My Hometown" a song about a Reagonized town that is falling apart, round of the diversity and beauty of the album. The song "Glory Days" has a message that almost all Americans can identify with and be proud of. "Dancing In The Dark" won Springsteen a Grammy the following year and rose to #2 on the charts.
Truly, "Born in the U.S.A." ranks not only as Springsteen's top albums, but with the top albums of all-time. The album tells of all thats right in and with America, and all that is not. Sometimes, their is little or no distinction between the two. The music is very modernized, replacing saxaphones and pianos with synthesizers and newer guitars. The music is also superb, and is a major breakthrough for Springsteen, creating famous "sing-a-long" chorus's and fantastic intro's, most notably the simple but powerful one in the title track. If there is one album that every American should own, this is it.
