HEALTHBRIEFS: HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE ISSUES THAT MATTER
http://www.drdrew.com/office/index.html
***************************************
* Tuesday: Sex Addiction: There's no such thing as too much sex, right?
Wrong. Sex addicts, like other kinds of addicts, numb their pain with
addictive behavior, except that the "medication" of choice is sex
instead of drugs or alcohol.
* Thursday: Herpes: Once considered a ticket to dating exile, herpes
can now be controlled with a little planning and common sense. We'll
explain how to deal with an outbreak of herpes, and how to avoid contracting
herpes in the first place (because who wants a sexually transmitted
disease?).

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************
QUESTION:
My girlfriend and I are thinking about having oral sex for the first
time. I am pretty sure I don't have any diseases, but could she get sick if
she swallows my semen?
DR. DREW:
If you are certain that you do not have any sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs), she cannot get sick from swallowing your semen. STDs can be
spread by oral contact and passed through bodily fluid, so be very aware of
this and take any necessary precaution if theres ever a doubt.
QUESTION:
Im concerned that my clitoris is huge. Also, my labia minora (inside
folds of the vagina) aren't inside my labia majora (outside structures of the
vagina). Instead, they hang out and get really irritated. What can I
do?
DR. DREW:
This is not an uncommon anatomic configuration, and its definitely not
something to be ashamed of/or concerned about health-wise. If the
irritation continues to bother you, there are plastic surgery
procedures that may remedy the problem, but this isnt something to rush into right
away. Talk with your health-care provider and with time, you will learn
to manage your condition and figure out ways to avoid discomfort and
irritation. Most important, this is nothing that you should be alarmed
about.
QUESTION:
I have a lot of blackheads on my nose. How can I get rid of them?
DR. DREW:
Blackheads and comedo, the toothpaste-like substance that lies just
underneath, are part of the dysfunction of the pores associated with
acne. Basically, the sebaceous secreting glands are functioning abnormally
and often become infected with a bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes.
If blackheads are the only acne symptom you have, your doctor can
prescribe comedo-dissolving agents, such as soap with salicylic acid and Retin-A.
If you also have pimples, they might prescribe either a topical and/or
oral antibiotic. If youre searching for an over-the-counter solution, look
for products that contain salicylic acid, or try those stick-on pore
strips. I dont know how effective those are for removing or preventing
blackheads, but its worth a try if you cant go to a dermatologist.
QUESTION:
Approximately six years ago, I noticed that I had a lump under the skin
on my butt. I didn't think much of it at the time, but since then Ive
noticed similar lumps on the back and sides of my neck and in my pelvic area.
Besides cancerous tumors, what else could these lumps be?
DR. DREW:
Thats a difficult question to answer without seeing the lumps, but I
suspect that youre describing smooth, soft lumps under the skin in the
soft tissue. Based on the location of these lumps, it sounds like
lipoma, benign (noncancerous) tumors made up of fat cells. They often appear
over the shoulders and in your lower body, but seldom cause problems. You
can have them surgically removed, but its not medically necessary. Of
course, its impossible for me to know what these lumps are without seeing them,
so its very important for you to get checked out by your doctor.
