QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************
QUESTION:
I have something that looks like a wart on my penis, but it's under the
skin. It hurts a little when I touch it, but otherwise I don't notice it.
Do I need to get it checked out?
DR. DREW: A wart surfaces on top of the skin, as if it's been "stuck
on"
your body. Since this bump is under the skin, it probably isn't a wart.
Smooth lesions under the skin are usually cysts, which are typically
harmless, fluid-filled sacks. However, the fact that it hurts means you
should have it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's nothing. If it
continues to be painful, it could impair your sexual functioning.
QUESTION:
Is it possible to be a dominatrix and *not* have psychological problems or
issues with your father? And can this be a safe lifestyle?
DR. DREW:
Certainly, it's possible to be a dominatrix without "issues" and it
*can*
be a safe lifestyle. If the dominatrix doesn't have intimacy issues or
other psychiatric symptoms, it could simply be a fantasy, role-playing
relationship between consenting partners. But, in my experience, this kind
of fetish usually means something. Most of the time, it's an expression of
a significant psychological disturbance, which causes people to sabotage
their relationships or to seek out chaotic or abusive partners. This
fetish can be a way of preventing intimacy from being established; instead
of handling the overwhelming feelings brought on by being physically
intimate, a dominatrix gets involved in detached, fantasy relationships
that involve overpowering her partner.
QUESTION:
How can I get rid of unwanted hair?
DR. DREW:
Technology has greatly improved in the hair removal business, so there are
lots of safe, effective ways to get rid of unwanted hair. Electrolysis is
the only method of permanent hair removal recognized by the American
Medical Association. The process involves inserting a small, sterile probe
into the hair follicle and, using a mild electrical current, destroying
the hair root. There are several different laser techniques available,
which involve using light energy to temporarily disable the hair follicle.
The more traditional forms of hair removalwaxing, shaving, depilatories
(over-the-counter chemical hair removers)are less expensive, but they
don't have the long-term benefits of electrolysis or laser removal. There
are medications used to treat excess body hair, such as spironolactone, a
diuretic (meaning it makes you pee) that has a side effect of reducing
body hair. Talk to a dermatologist about your options to figure out what
will work best for you.
QUESTION:
Im 22 and have been chewing tobacco for six years. I go through three to
four cans a week, and every time I try to quit cold turkey I become
unreasonable. Will the nicotine patch help me quit?
DR. DREW:
The dangers of smokeless tobacco often go unrecognized, despite the fact
that this habit is causing a massive health problem in our country. People
who use smokeless tobacco face a dramatically increased risk of cancers of
the mouth (lip, tongue and cheek), throat and stomach, as well as gum,
tooth and heart disease. Unfortunately, people who chew tobacco also tend
to be even more severely addicted than smokers because the dose they
consume is usually higher. In other words, now is a good time to quit.
Nicotine patches and gum are helpful tools in decreasing the drive to chew
or smoke. There's also an effective prescription medication that actually
targets the area of the brain that causes nicotine cravings. Good luck!
