QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************

QUESTION:
I'm a 20-year-old male who has had acne since age 16, and my doctor has
been successful in treating it. My question is, can a tanning bed help
with acne? Also, how long after I stop taking Accutane would it be safe to
be exposed to sunlight for a long period of time?

DR. DREW:
Tanning beds may help acne initially, but dermatologists have found that
acne will often become worse after a while. Tanning causes the skin to
thicken and keratinize, which makes it more difficult to clear the pores.
In general, tanning is not considered an appropriate way to manage
acne--not to mention the other harmful effects of sun exposure, such as
wrinkling and the risk of skin cancer. To answer your second question, you
could begin normal sun exposure two weeks after you stop taking Accutane.
You obviously know that you should never expose yourself to sunlight while
on Accutane, but did you know you should always use sunscreen, whether or
not you're taking Accutane? Exposure to sunlight for "a long period of
time" is damaging to your skin and significantly increases your risk for
skin cancer.

QUESTION:
I'm curious about one aspect of anal sex. What's in it for women? I
understand why a man might be into it, whether he's giving (tighter
orifice) or receiving (stimulates the prostate gland), but what does a
woman get that makes the experience sexually gratifying?

DR. DREW:
Well, for starters, all women are different, so anal sex isn't necessarily
stimulating to all women. In fact, some women may find it uncomfortable or
even painful. Some women may perceive it as erotic and stimulating simply
because it's not the norm. Other women, albeit a small group, can
experience orgasm through this kind of stimulation. However, I couldn't
tell you why it's different for these women.

QUESTION:
I have been smoking marijuana for the past five to six years, and some
days I have no appetite. Does my addiction have anything to do with this?

DR. DREW:
I admire your ability to identify easily as an addict. It increases the
probability that one day you will be able to deal with this problem.
Suppression of appetite can be a complication associated with chronic
marijuana use. Most typically, I would expect to see loss of appetite with
mood disturbances (changes in appetite are often a common feature of
depression, and in most cases, it's a suppression of appetite). Marijuana
can also have an effect on insulin release, which could affect appetite as
well. This effect is usually what stimulates the appetite when people get
high. I know of no research that supports the idea that chronic
stimulation of insulin could result in appetite changes, though it makes
sense to me intuitively that this may have something to do with the
diminishment of your appetite.

QUESTION:
How can I make sure a potential sex partner does not have any STDs? What
tests should potential partners undergo before engaging in sex?

DR DREW:
Both partners can be screened for hepatitis B, HIV, and syphilis with a
blood test. There is a test for Chlamydia, and genital warts can be
confirmed or ruled out in a physical exam. Unfortunately, there is no
single test or screen that can rule out all STDs in potential partners. If
you and your partner are tested for HIV, it's a good idea to use condoms
for six months anyway, then get tested again. Your safest bet is to use
condoms no matter what tests your partner passes. There's always a slight
risk of contracting an STD, unless both you and your partner have never
had sex.
