QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************
QUESTION:
My boyfriend and I have been dating for six months and have been having
sex consistently for about five months. We've noticed that when he
ejaculates inside me (I'm on the pill so we don't use condoms), the semen
comes shooting out of me after he pulls out. It just doesn't seem to want
to stay inside of me. Is this normal?
DR. DREW:
Well, where else would it go? Like the old saying goes, "What goes up,
must come down." This is a completely normal occurrence. It does not have
any relevance to your fertility or anything else for that matter. But
since we're on the subject of sex, remember: the pill can't protect you
from sexually transmitted diseases but a condom can. Condoms would
probably contain most of that post-sex spillage, too.
QUESTION:
Lately, I have noticed that I am longing for attention. I am not really in
the "popular crowd" at school and often find myself wishing for attention
any way I can get it--broken bones, death, anything. I know this isn't
normal (or is it?) and I want to stop it. Ive never had anything bad
happen in my life except my parents divorce when I was two.
DR. DREW:
Young males often act out in aggressive ways to try to get attention. Some
of this is a natural impulse caused by the flood of testosterone entering
your central nervous system, but wanting to die or intentionally breaking
your bones isn't "normal" per se. In all likelihood, you have some
unresolved issues--perhaps you're ashamed of yourself or you feel
inadequate for some reason, and you don't feel "worthy" of being part of
the popular crowd. These feelings only feed your anger and aggressiveness,
which is what's causing you to act out in this way. Regardless of why
you're doing this, the best way to get these symptoms to settle down is to
engage in close relationships with people you trust. You need to feel
comfortable sharing genuine feelings about yourself with these people
because that will help you deal with feeling inadequate or ashamed of
yourself. Also, if your family has a history of addiction, it's common for
addicts to act out in thrill-seeking ways to make themselves feel better.
But the bottom line is, drawing attention to yourself may make you feel
better in the moment, but that feeling is short-lived and it doesn't boost
your sense of well-being. Connecting with people and working on improving
your self-esteem, however, will help you work through some of these
feelings and your need for attention.
QUESTION:
I am 24 and I have a large growth, almost the size of a golf ball, on my
left labia. I've had it since I was 14, but it has grown about three times
as big since then. Every doctor I have seen says, "Don't bother it if it
doesn't bother you." It used to only hurt during my period, but now it
hurts every day and it's still growing. What can I do to make it go away?
DR. DREW:
This sounds like a Bartholin's gland cyst. The Bartholin's gland is just
inside the entrance to the vaginal canal and produces the lubricating
fluid that protects this tender area and aids in penetration during
intercourse. A trauma or infection in this area could block the gland and
cause a buildup of secretions. These cysts are fairly easy to excise (cut
into) and drain. At this point, it's clear the cyst is bothering you, so
you should make sure your doctor knows that you're experiencing discomfort
or pain. The fact that you've already had the cyst evaluated by a doctor
means this probably isn't anything to be terribly concerned about. But you
need to make sure your doctor hears you when you tell him or her that it
is uncomfortable, and you want something to be done to correct it.
QUESTION:
I'm a 20-year-old male and my girlfriend just started taking birth control
pills. I'm curious about the sugar pills she's taking during the week of
her period. Specifically, should her period start and end on the days she
starts and stops taking these "reminder" pills? What if her period ends
three days before she starts the hormone pills again?
DR. DREW:
Even if your girlfriend's period ends a few days before she starts the
"active" pills, she should take the remainder of the sugar pills and start
the hormone pills as scheduled. A woman's period can last anywhere from
three to seven days, and many women who take the pill have lighter and
shorter periods, so this is nothing to be worried about. Also, remember
that bleeding throughout the month can be common for women on the pill. If
she experiences spotting, she can talk to her doctor about using a higher
dose of estrogen. As long as she's taking the pills at the same time every
day, the birth control pill is a safe, effective means of preventing
pregnancy, although it doesn't protect you from STDs.
