QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************

QUESTION:
I'm 18 years old and I am wondering if I should wait until I am married
to have sex. My decision isn't based on any religious beliefs, nor do I
currently have a boyfriend. I simply want to make the decision that is
healthiest for me. I know I won't have sex before I am in love, but do
you think it is wise to wait until marriage or to experience different
partners?

DR. DREW:
I think this is a very personal issue that every individual has to
decide for themselves. It sounds as though you are very clear on what is not a
healthy choice for you, which is very important. Based on your
question, it's obvious that you have a very healthy outlook and you're making
appropriate choices that are good for you. As you get older, it's also
important for you to continue to listen to your feelings and instincts
when you get involved in relationships. I suspect that when the time
comes and you're faced with the decision to engage in sex or wait until
marriage, you'll know which choice is right for you. At 18, you're
still quite young, and I would urge you not to have any rigid expectations of
yourself. And last but not least, be sure that your needs are being met
in your relationships, and that you are not coerced into a physical
relationship that you're not sure you want.

QUESTION:
I'm a 30-year-old male with a history of depression, shyness, and low
self-esteem. I was previously taking an antidepressant and had good
results, but it decreased my sex drive. St. John's Wort didn't seem to
help, either. Is there an antidepressant that wont do this? I want to
feel better and find a girlfriend. Any advice?

DR. DREW:
Depression affects nearly 20 million Americans every year, and by some
accounts, as many as 20 percent of these people may die because of this
disease. You simply should not rely on over-the-counter or herbal
therapies, like St. John's Wort, to treat such a serious illness,
particularly if your condition improved with the prescription
antidepressant.

I can understand your concern about your decreased sex drive, and there
are medications that can reverse these side effects. Oftentimes,
certain antidepressants, such as serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) cause
more sexual side effects. Switching between SSRIs or lowering the dose and
adding another type of antidepressant can help. I encourage you to talk
with the doctor who prescribed the medication about these issues.

QUESTION:
I am a 19-year-old virgin, but I have these wart-like things on the
"lips" of my vagina. They seem to appear only when I'm on my period, and
sometimes they itch. I was on birth control pills for a while to
control cramps, but I stopped them because I kept spotting, or bleeding before
my period. What are these bumps, and should I go to the doctor?

DR. DREW:
I'm not certain about what you're describing, but I'm fairly sure
they're not genital warts. Warts do not appear and disappear and aren't
connected in any way to your menstrual cycle. It's also very unlikely that you
would contract these without some sort of sexual contact. Women have various
glands in that area that can become more visible around the time of
their period, and I suspect this is what you're describing. However, you
shouldn't feel uncomfortable asking your doctor to have a look so you
know exactly what you're dealing with.

QUESTION:
Can putting on a condom cause a guy to lose his erection? If so, what
can I do to prevent this from happening?

DR. DREW:
Absolutely. This is one of the reasons many men don't like to use
condoms. I always tell guys to practice putting condoms on when they're alone so
they're more comfortable and experienced when a partner is present.
Practicing will enable them to put a condom on more quickly when the
time comes, which means it won't be as bothersome and they're less likely to
lose their erection. Also, men find it arousing to have their partners
assist, so if you use your imagination and make the condom part of your
foreplay, this shouldn't be a problem.
