GOT QUESTIONS? GET ANSWERS
********************************************
QUESTION:
I am very devoted to staying a virgin until marriage, but there is this
guy I've liked for a long time, and I feel pressured to have sex with him.
He knows I do not want to have sex, but he won't stop pressuring me. How
can I make him understand that I don't want to have sex?
DR. DREW:
Get away from this guy! He clearly has absolutely no respect or empathy
for your values and feelings. It is very clear to me that once he gets
what he wants, I'm sure he will be gone. If he had any concern about how
you felt about your virginity, he would back off. As such, I would very
strongly urge you to get away from this guy and don't look back.
QUESTION:
I was wondering what effects serotonin has on the brain. What happens when
levels are too high or low?
DR. DREW:
Serotonin is the chemical in your brain responsible for regulating your
moods. Low levels of serotonin are associated with a depressive state.
Some people experience serotonin depletion throughout their lives, which
puts them at risk for other disorders, such as alcoholism. High levels of
serotonin are caused by one of two things: (1) carcinoid syndrome, a
condition in which a tumor (often in the gastrointestinal tract) produces
excessive amounts of serotonin. This causes flushing, irritability, and
fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate. (2) Serotonin excess
syndrome caused by medication. This can lead to hyperirritability,
diarrhea and extreme fluctuations in blood pressure and pulse, which can
be fatal.
QUESTION:
I need to get out of a relationship, but the guy I'm seeing is known for
his temper. I've tried to let him down easy without leading him on or
anything, but now he calls me all the time and tracks me down when I'm
out. I'm scared, what should I do?
DR. DREW:
I would certainly want my daughter to tell my wife or me if she was stuck
in a situation like this. You are clear that you want to get out of this
relationship. You must terminate it and cut all ties. If he really looks
as though he can't handle it or is going to become a danger to you or
himself, you shouldn't hesitate to notify your parents and your school or
community authorities.
Be clear with him, and don't think that just because you are avoiding him,
he is going to get the message. Avoidance tends to sometimes cause these
guys to turn up the heat that much more.
QUESTION:
I'm a female teenager and basically a social outcast. My mother died when
I was young. I have few friends, but the ones I do have tend to take
advantage of me. I often feel depressed and think about death, and
sometimes I get violent and drink. I also have terrible self-esteem. What
problems could my behavior lead to, and how can I fix them?
DR. DREW:
At the very least, you are describing severe depression, and it is crucial
that you get professional treatment. You must get an accurate diagnosis by
a qualified doctor, but please don't wait until this problem gets worse.
There is no reason for you to suffer like this when there are very
successful treatments for this disease. Through medication and therapy,
you can turn your life around. Depression affects about 20 million
Americans every year, and it's a potentially fatal disease that kills up
to 18 percent of sufferers. I am not exaggerating when I say that your
life could be in danger because of this condition. Please talk to your
doctor or at the very least a counselor at your school about getting
professional help.
