The First Day Morning. |
|
| About an hour and a half north of Los Angeles lies the town of Mojave, where we start our journey. | |
| I do not include a picture, because it is barely more than ugly developed strips along two intersecting highways. Be sure to stop at the KFC (tm), and read the historical marker about the borax depot. You might visit the other end of the famous Twenty Mule Team Road. |
| Stop 1: Red Rock Canyon | |
| Driving up Highway 14, the sun is about to come up over Castle Butte. | |

The Temple is a good place to start. It’s actually called Red Cliff Preserve Day-Use Area. Most people stop only here. Hike up to the recesses between the columns. (I’ve eaten meals here often.) |

Carefully cross the highway and wash and hike west to the less-visited canyon. Watch the traffic unseen. A coyote trail passes under the rock pillar at the center. At the head of the canyon is a semi-circular 12-foot dry fall and a balancing rock. |

Few people find this side canyon. You must walk away from the "crutch" of roads and trails to find the true desert. A family of owls nests around the corner. |

My zendo under a stand of Joshua Trees. Please stop by for a lesson. Plan to sit and contemplate the desert quietly for an hour or two.More surprises |
| The next part of the journey is the Randsburg area. | |
