#912 The Screaming Skull
(with short Robot Rumpus)

(episode guide by Embers)

Movie Summary

SHORT: A Gumby and Pokey adventure. Gumby hires robots to do his yardwork and they end up destroying the house. Then Gumby's dad Gumbo comes home and kills them all. The powerful message of the story is that you should always do your chores. (Or not.)

MOVIE: The opening sequence boasts that if you are scared to death by the movie, the studio will pay for your funeral. Not necessary, thanks. Jenny, a gentle girl whose parents drowned, has just married Eric, whose first wife died several years ago. A perfect match, if you ask me. Anyway, the ghost of Marion, the wife, comes back to life in the form of a skull that screams, hence the title. The crazy gardener, Mickey, who was madly in love with Marion, denies any involvement, but no one believes him. 'Cause it's not true. There you are then.

Host Segments

Prologue: Tom Servo has become a butterfly.

Segment One: Servo explains the circumstances that led up to his no longer looking like a butterfly. Pearl and company convince the SOLers that they had an appointment to wear penguin costumes at ten o'clock. It turns out it was all a trick, and everyone argues about who was more embarrassed by it.

Segment Two: Crow and Servo create a clay-based world and perform a skit. Mike writes a note to Pearl to go easy on the Gumby shorts.

Segment Three: Servo tries to scam a free coffin out of the studio that made the movie, almost succeeds, then changes his mind. The order, however, has already been placed.

Segment Four: Crow is dressed up like a skull to scare Mike. Mike hits him with a bag of chips, then with an aluminum baseball bat, then with golf clubs. Servo's head falls off at the end.

Segment Five: The delivery man brings Servo's coffin. Bobo tries to play the penguin costume trick with a monkey costume, but the SOLers don't believe him. Brain Guy shrinks him as punishment.

Stinger: Eric throws a stool at the skeleton of Marion.

My Thoughts

The short made the ep. Honestly, the movie, to me, was pretty mediocre. Gumby, on the other hand, is ripe for riffing. "Thank goodness for the internal genitalia!"

I remember a story told to me by someone once about this ep. He said that his sister gets upset when Mike smacks Crow's head with the golf club. Isn't that nice?
