An Intimate Portrait Of Our Fearless Leader

In four or more years, this is what we will find on billboards all over America, just you wait and see...

I've decided to make more out of this section, rather than just show the lovely portrait above. I'm going to present my commentary on media coverage about the doings of our Exhalted Emperor--I mean President, and let you read them and decide whether or not he was serious about uniting the parties, as well as other things he told us he'd do when running for office.

NOTE: Those of you who visit my site regularly may have noticed that this section has been gone since late September 2001. I look back on it now, and I think the reason I took it down is I that had actually found myself approving of the President's words and deeds immediately following the atrocities that occured on September 11, letting my emotions get the best of me, as many of us still are. (Don't get me wrong, now... the events of that day were horrible tragedies, the like of which should not, and will hopefully never, happen again; and my deepest condolences go to the friends and families of those who lost their lives.) But now, in light of more recent events, it seems that Bush and his administration are starting to show their true face, in such a way as to make anyone who show the slightest bit of dissent, or even criticism, to appear treasonous and unpatriotic. Therefore, I have placed this section back up, and will be collecting my thoughts and saved news articles, and will be posting them here, very soon.

Media Caution Urged on Jenna Bush

As you may or may not know, Jenna Bush, President Bush's 19-year-old daughter, was caught trying to buy alcohol illegally (on 5.29.2001) for the second time in about four weeks. Big deal, right? Teenagers do stuff like that all the time, and the fact that Jenna Bush is the President's daughter should be no big deal; and though I know they will anyway, I don't think that the media really needs to cover such a story.
HOWEVER (not to sound like Kenneth Starr or anything, seriously), what disturbs me about the whole thing is the White House's response to coverage of the misadventures of Miss Bush. Press Secretary Ari Fleischer released a statement about the whole affair to the media on 5.31.2001. Below is the statement, in its entirety:

"I would urge all of you to very carefully think through how much you want to pursue this. I understand that there's a question of law. I've never called anybody or suggested to anybody that the coverage today is in any way inappropriate. But to go beyond that I would urge you to be very careful because any reaction of the parents is parental; it is not governmental. It is family. It's private and the American people respect that."

Now, I don't know about you all, but doesn't it sound like Bush and the White House people are saying, "Keep your mouths shut, or else"? Something to ponder...

More Bush Babblings

Perhaps it's just me, but it seems as if things in the United States are slowly but surely heading in a direction that's harmful to just about everyone living in this country. Consider the following....
- Lowering taxes but increasing the military budget... where will this leave education, the environment and health care?
- Talk of promoting abstinence among young people, but cutting back family planning?
- Allowing federal funds to go to faith-based charities, but still allowing religious organizations to be exempt from taxation?
- Drilling for oil... in national parks and wildlife refuges?
- The House approving a missile defense system... now, did the Cold War end already, or again, is just me?
- The Bush administration halting the distribution of a book about U.S. diplomatic and intelligence activities in Indonesia during the mid 60s? Sounds like a step above book burnings to me...
But then, you know, I could be imagining all of this.
