Believe it or not, there are actuallg good things going on in Corvallis (or COW Valley as we University or Oregon fans like to call them) They won the Civil War for the first time in five years in 1998, went 5-6 which doesnt sound too good but this is their best record since the streak began back in 1970, and if it wasn't for a couple of heartbreaking losses At Washington and agains UCLA they would have went to a bowl game for the first time since '67. There is a new coach in town. after troubling times with the Seahawks of the NFL, Dennis Erickson takes control of the Beavers this season with the departure of Mike Riley to the NFL'S San Diego Chargers. Erickson Rebuilt Dead Programs at Idaho and Washington State before winning two national championships at the Univerity of Miami (FL). Offense State has 6 starters returning this season lead by sophmores quarterback Johnathan Smith and running back Ken Simonton. Smith, as a walk on red shirt freshman took over for Terrence Bryant in week seven of the season and never lost his starting job. he went for 1,427 yards and six touchdowns, including a Husky Stadium record 469 yard performance in a 35-34 loss to Washington. Simonton became the fourth back in Beavers history to rush for 1,000 yards, and he also added 13 touchdowns for the Beavs. Wide reciever could be a consern as both Gred Ainsworth and Tim Alexander have graduated, and taken 141 receptions along with them. however Roddy Tompkins and Robert Prescott return and big things are expected from James Newson. The offensive line showed improvement in 1998 and that should carry over to this season. Defense Inoke Breckterfield is gone, but the Beavs have signed 4 JC players in hopes of replacing him (fat chance). The inside of the line should be fine with seniors Shawn Bell and Aaron Wells starting. The linebackers will be the strongest part of the defense. The secondary is the biggest concern for the Beavers this season. Only free safety Terrence Carroll and cornerback Keith Heyward-Johnson return. |
