PHX is a simple airport, with three terminals and two runways which straddle them (8/26 L&R). It is a hub location for both America West and Southwest, and over the course of the day you'll probably see all of the special colorschemed planes for both airlines. Heavies are mildly scarce, and to my knowledge, British Airways, Aeromexico, and Lufthansa are the only regular international representatives. Runway direction usually switches from 8 to 26 around noon. For outdoor spotting, dress light and be sure to bring along something cold to drink...summertime temperatures climb well into the 100's.
INDOORS:
-Terminal 2, Gates 13-15: When takeoffs are to the west, this is one of the most awesome views in the country. The runway is so close to the terminal, and the rotation point on 26L is right in front of you. Planes go roaring by with a view that will take your breath away! One thing you'll notice at PHX is that there is almost no sound-proofing, so you almost feel like you're sitting outside.
-Terminal 2, Gate 23: Another great view from Terminal 2, this time on the other side of the field.
-Terminal 4 Walkway: In Terminal 4, the American West terminal, there is a walkway between concourses that give a solid view of arrivals on 26L and takeoffs on 8R.
PRE-9/11 SECURITY REPORT:
-Security at PHX is very friendly. Last time I was there I spent most of the day on top of the Terminal 3 parking garage. I saw one security guard
in the early morning who stopped and looked at me but did nothing. I had my camera out
and in full view...I’m sure he saw it. But I got no hassle from the police...only from
Mother Nature and her little 115-degree practical joke.
