STL has two main runways in use: 12/30 (L & R), and there is no dominant direction in use...it changes day-to-day, and sometimes several times a day. Most of the traffic was TWA MD-80's (and probably now is mostly AA MD-20's), along with their prop-jobs and 757's. Fans of heavies will be severely disappointed (I think I counted 6 767's in action the entire day, and they don't get any bigger than that here).
INDOORS:
-I have yet to ever step foot into the terminal of STL, so I have nothing to report on the spotting indoors.
OUTDOORS:
-Berkeley High School. Located at the northeast corner of the airport, Berkeley High has a large grassy knoll where you can sit and watch the action from across the field. Given its location, this spot is really only good for watching arrivals on 30L/R...if planes are using the 12's, this spot is close to worthless.
-94th Aero Squadron Restaurant. Located on the northeast side of the airport on McDonnell Blvd., about 1/4 mile south of the McDonnell Douglas facility, you can get a bite to eat while you sit and watch the planes. Inside they have headphones that you can use to listen to tower communications
-Lindbergh Blvd. Spotters' Lot. On the east side of the airport, this lot is good for watching arrivals on the 12 runways.
PRE-9/11 SECURITY REPORT:
-Security doesn't seem to be any big problem at STL. Over the course of the day, I saw two different patrols pass by the knoll at Berkeley High...one of them even stopped...but neither said anything to me. There are signs directing you not to park or stand along the perimeter, but what airport doesn't have such signs? Security appears to be of little concern here.
